I think burying the thing is a good idea. Think about this... If you plant a tree over the stump, the tree will use the stump as food. The tree will also grow and displace the area the stump is taking. The stump will work like a nursery tree and help make the new tree grow stronger.
I used to work for a logging outfit as a mechanic. I got into a discussion with one of the loggers who informed me that one of the reasons that lumber is a poorer quality these days as compared to decades ago is trees aren't allowed to decay in the woods naturally. Therefore, the nutriants that the fallen tree provides to the seedlings is no longer there.
By leaving the stump in the ground, you'll allow nature to work the way it was intended, and will help the new tree grow with the nutriants it's supposed to have.
