Went to an industrial surplus action today. 3 auctioneers & 8 buyers showed up. I picked up two south bend 9A lathes complete with tooling, steel benches and collet closers, 6 HD tall steel shelving units, 4 large flammable liquid storage cabinets, Clausing vari-speed floor drill press, rockwell HD 15" bench-top drill press, Welch Vacuum pump, 3 ton arbor press, 30 pcs 3' x 4' copper sheets (.05 thick) and two 24 x 18 Tool room grade granite surface plates on steel stands for less than the cost of a decent chain saw. somebody pinch me. A lot of the big stuff went unsold, even at ridiculous prices. I bought more than I have room for. have not been to an auction like that in a lonnnnnng time.

Less than a good chain saw. about $300 less.

When you consider that I get between $300 and $350 for a SB 9A collet closer on eBay, and each lathe had one, just those two small parts alone paid for the entire purchase. One of the lathes even has a T-slot cross slide and an Aloris tool post. the T-slot cross slides go for $350+. and then I'll still have all the other parts.............
Used flammable liquid storage cabinets in good condition go for $300 - $450 ea on CL.
The two drill presses should net roughly $1000 between them but I may keep the Rockwell for the barn. I have a big vari-speed Rockwell in the basement shop but sometimes it's handy to have one out there. if I can fit it. The shelving I'll keep as well as one of the surface plates and the Royersford arbor press. Have to get busy clearing up some space....

Wow! I might have to rethink the auction thing. Usually, you waste a whole day for nothing. Around here, most auctions are doing the online thing resembling eBay. Congratulations on your nice scores!

Congrat's on your great buys! Just curious, but what do you plan to use the .05" thick copper sheeting for?

Wow, that IS great!

Last couple of auctions I went to (aviation stuff), there was one auctioneer and at least 100 bidders. If the item could be recognized it got bid up to higher than new prices.

I need lessons on buying, my whole life it's been buy high, sell low. When I was a cop in Oakland, I had the bright idea of buying up drugs on the street and flying them down to sell in Mexico. Not much risk of getting caught, no one would suspect that and not much competition either.
