Most of those bench models have bases that can be bolted down. Then a movable table under the head which rotates, but it can also turn sideways parallel to the drill bit. The head is held in position by a set screw(s) but you can rotate the head and table away from the base. I position my bench model on the edge so when I rotate the head, it's over the floor. Then I can drill longer, larger pieces under it. My work table has sides so I can clamp or space my work to it. But usually I rotate the movable table and turn it vertical and I can clamp sideways to it.

They use dc motors because they are the cheepest way to make a variable speed.........Larry

My variable speed blowers are AC and use inexpensive solid state controllers the size of light dimmers.

Do you know if the DC motors are brush type, universal, shunt or series?

I recently was looking into buying a Drill press went to Tractor supply they had a clarke floor model for 175 or so but it had a cheesy looking motor on it and cheesy controls

Went to home depot and got a Ryobi with a digital Tachometer and a laser it was supposed to be higher than i paid but when i was looking at the display i opened up the top cover and it had a price tag on top for like 168 so i asked the guy to let me have it for that price

Ended up getting a good press

It takes no tools to change the speeds there is a lever that you can control it with it goes down below 500 to 2500 or so id have to go check to be sure

the problem with AC on a solid state dimmer is they have no torque. a fan needs very little torque at low speed. as the load is directly proportional to the speed.

DC motors have a relitivly flat torque curve no matter what the RPM

The Clarke Press at TSC is definitely econo, for sure. What I liked about it was low cost ($139) and a speed (260rpm) low enough for drilling steel. Slower would be even better.

A 1150 RPM motor is a 6 pole motor, but does not seem available in 120V 1 Ph. It was just a thought. bjr

All this DP talk got me wonderin' what the speeds were on my Harbor Freight old green unit with a Central Machinery brand label. The label says 3/4 HP and lists all 16 speeds. The speeds are achieved by opening a hinged lid on top and positioning two V belts on three multi-diameter pulleys IAW a simple diagram.

The lowest speed is 195 RPM and the fastest is 3630 RPM.

The quill travel is a bout 3 1/8 or a tad more.

Sometimes I wish it had more power and sometimes I wish it had more quill travel and sometimes I wish it had a larger table and sometimes I wish it operated itself but none of these have ever been enough to motivate me to buy another as it usually does everything I need just fine although I sometimes use workarounds such things as raising the table to make up for short quill throw.

The bench top Delta my wife got as a door prize is very convenient for changing speeds with a continuously variable knob but the slowest it goes is too fast for a bit over 1/4 inch in metal more than 12-14 ga. It is OK for wood but I use the HF 100 times or more for every time I turn on the Delta.

The motors that I have are purmnet magnet. The brushles DC motors that I have worked on are 3 phase AC motors with an invertor built in to them so they would not work at all........Larry
