Dripping a Frost Free Hydrant

I take the hose off my hydrant after I use it and blow the hose out with air. I use water every day for the horses.

Yeah, was aware of it's purpose. What I don't know is if it eventually will let the source side vent once all the hose side pressure is gone though.

I was wrong. I think you probably could use them on a hydrant if they let air in once you turn off the hydrant and take the water pressure off, as they lets air into the hose, and the standpipe, allowing both to drain.

I've got one of those. I only use it in the summer and the little valve handles are a pain in the summer. I think they would be even stiffer at 0 degrees F. Wouldn't you still need to drain the hose to avoid freezing.

Yes I also only use the Y and hose in the summer.

By the 1st or 2nd week in September they are removed from the hydrant and blown free of any water, then stored in the greenhouse until late spring.

In the winter there is nothing attached to the hydrant, but a 5 gallon bucket is sitting upside down on top of the hydrant.

On another hydrant at the garage I use the Y as well. Used to have a three or four thingie but the knobs were tiny and difficult to operate. Found one at Habitat as s Y with really BIG operating Levers. Always seems like I need a short 18" hose for filling buckets, a longer hose and a pressure washer connection.

Seems so.
In the summer, there痴 no need to drain (let air in) the hydrant pipe. Any water that might be siphoned back into the hydrant from the hose is just going to drain into the ground or get flushed out as soon as hydrant is reopened. If the hose has a spray nozzle on the other end, no water will be siphoned back into the hydrant unless there痴 leaks.
Leaving the hose痴 典 valve open when you open the 殿ir side valve not only allows the hydrant to drain, but allows the hose to drain out its far end too (also ideal in winter).

I take the hose off in the winter to drain it, that's why I didn't see the point of the Y. I use one in the summer so I can use one side for irrigation and the other side is available for other uses. The one that I have has valves that are tight and open with some difficulty, I would rather not deal with it when it's below 0.
