Mowing Drive shaft clogged with grass

I'm posting this under operation because when bush hogging in tall grass and weeds I find the front drive shaft is gathering strands and continues until there is a huge mass a couple inches thick. Being fairly new this really caught me off guard the first time. I used a machete to cut the mass off and it took a good while to get it clear.

Does anyone else have this problem and is there a way to prevent it, maybe I'm missing some guard or cover? Tips on the best way to cut wound grass off a shaft is also appreciated.

i streacth a piece of conveyor belt from the front weight rack to the drawbar stops the wrap up and keeps sticks out of the bottom side of my tractor

I don't mow in 4 wheel drive.

Great idea with the conveyor belt! And I know a guy who replaces them... this forum is awesome. :thumbsup:

P.S. I thought about going 2wd but it seems that it just disengaged the front transmission and the shaft continued to spin so that didn't work for me. Maybe something to investigate if/when a new model. Some of the cutting pretty well requires 4wd.
