Rear Finish Mower Drive Shaft Stuck on PTO

There really isn't a damm thing you can do when you run into a problem and have all those shields and plastic crap in the way. I don't know why I should have to endure all that stuff (even having to pay for it) because a few people aren't smart enough to look out for their own well being.

It's the reason why the first thing I do with a new or used tractor, is remove the PTO shields. Then, you can work on it and get a pry bar on it. The second thing I do, is never, ever go near the thing in operation, or even stopped with the engine running.

I totally agree. Anything pto driven can cripple or kill in the blink of an eye and mowers are the worst of the bunch. PTO shields can give a false sense of safty thereby luring unsuspecting victims within reach of a rotating shaft.

Because accidents can and do happen for a multitude of reasons. And for the manufacturing companies to help protect themselves from lawsuits should people like yourself get wrapped around the PTO drive drive shaft.

The manufacturers provide the safeguards. What you or any other purchaser does with them after the purchase is your business and assume the risk.

to the poster suggesting removal of the clip under the pin on this Woods brand yoke....... Surprise.... There is no clip and there never was!

If there's no spring clip on the bottom of the pin, look for a roll pin perpendicular to the push pin that holds the push pin in place.

I would avoid a bunch of hammering on the yolk or heating as you might end up damaging the output shaft bearings and retainer. Then you will really have a job!
If, and that's a big "IF" I got to the point that I determined that the yolk was definitely seized; here's what I would do:
Drive to a smooth flat surface.
Lower the mower to the ground.
Disconnect the top link and lower arms.
WITH THE PTO OFF, slowly drive forward until the shaft seperates.
Now you can flip the shaft up and see if you can get a puller on it.
The U-joint may prevent that. If so, disassemble U-joint.
Now you can pull it off the shaft with a puller.
Good time to get a new U-joint anyway although you can reuse the old one .

Have a Woods mower that's been coupled to the pto for 25 years. Has the push button or pin type of release. After lots of wd and pb blaster, pin only goes down about 3/4 of its full length.
If it has been hooked up that long in one position, the pin and/or spline may be worn together. Does the pto slip joint still slip? If not, you may have to disconnect the 3pt to be able to wiggle the pto enough to release it.

Any amount of heat could help; you don't need to get it cherry red, just have the metal expand enough to break the rust seal. I have a heavy duty electric heat gun that gets things warm enough so that you dont want to grab hold.

^^^ Totally agree.

Some heat. PB Blaster. And some raps and it'll free up.

That thing has been in a deep sleep for 25 years. It's not going to wake up "instantly"
