Tractor Mike talks about pto retaining types, "frozen balls", and what to do to make it slide better.

Why Can't I Can't Get My PTO On - YouTube

This video shows the inside of pto locking mechanisms and what might make them stick.

Also, before trying the horseshoe clip and the punch, is there any harm in forcing the pin down flush? Seems that if I can drive it flush, I might be able to then free the yoke from the spline. Right?

Lots of good tips here. On your next cutter, remove the driveline from the tractor PTO shaft at least once a year, clean and grease it. Also separate the telescoping shaft, clean and grease it as well.

instead of driving it down with a hammer, do you have a small C clamp? see if you can get something on the pin and won't restrict the closing of the clamp and see if you can get it pushed all the way in with that

Jaxs suggested to remove the horseshoe clip (i assume under the pin) and drive the pin out.

Jaxs, would you drive it from the top of the pin or from the bottom (the clip side) ?

If the direction pin should be driven after clip has been removed isn't obvious you should seriously consider takeing it to a pro.
To address suggestions that pin be clamped or tied down while attempting to remove shaft. Some yokes release when pin is flush with yoke, others release at lesser depression. Having the pin removed solve's that. Another benefit of removing pin is ability to get more lubricant to shaft splines. Pack either pin opening with a piece of plastic grocery bag, turn it to bottom then fill hole with PB blaster.

Forums are a great way for us to share helpful info.

It's unfortunate that one poster chose to wander from giving tips and found it necessary to denigrate the Op. I think most everyone will agree that there's no place for getting ugly on this great forum where folks are seeking help.

Oh by the way, to the poster suggesting removal of the clip under the pin on this Woods brand yoke....... Surprise.... There is no clip and there never was!

Keep the PB blaster applications going, every time you think about it or walk by, Use a hammer and try tapping the yoke forwards and backwards. There are repair kits for the yoke more than likely that will fit yours IF you break the pin.
They can take some heavy tapping, I think you'll find out it won't take much to get the button down. It probably doesn't go all the way flush into the yoke.
Getting the yoke off the shaft may take some more work. Just keep messing with it and use copious amounts of PB.

It's the reason why the first thing I do with a new or used tractor, is remove the PTO shields. Then, you can work on it and get a pry bar on it. The second thing I do, is never, ever go near the thing in operation, or even stopped with the engine running.

This^^^ and you can go on and remove the mower. Let the shaft just pull out of the mower, grease shaft good and slide it back in, when you get it off the tractor.
