I have a long driveway and don't know when people drive up when I am in the house. Need advice for a good alarm system.

But ya, found out a deer traveled down my drive every night at 10:20 pm :)

I had the same issue ... animals & birds triggering the alarm. I have a magnetic sensor now, but even it false alarms during thunderstorms... And when the wind or animals move the wire fence in front of the sensor.

I'm watching this for better suggestions ... maybe the old fashioned bell & hose that the gas stations used to use.

I had one of the HF @ $29. a few years ago and it gave nothing but false alarms!! I stood at the window watching as it triggered. I finally figured out that it was picking up the heat radiation. I tried taping off part of it to limit sensitivity but it didn't help.
20 years ago Radio Shack sold an infered alarm that had a beam and mirror. If the beam was broken it went off. I have tried to find one like it but can't.
They probably baned them because the bothered the squirrels or something.

Dakota alerts. Read the directions and you will be fine. Put a reminder in your phone to change the battery every 3-4 months.

I tried a couple different alarms and this one work the best for me. Mighty Mule - Wireless Driveway Alarm (FM131)

You bury the magnet beside the driveway and it will pick any metal object that passes by and you can adjust the sensitivity. I think it will pick up around 300' form the house depending on surroundings.

I have the dakata alert MURS system it works over 1200ft. My neighbor over a mile away has the same system if I set mine to his code I can pick his up.

It does alert on cows and the like.

Mine has been erratic. Sometimes it will detect me passing by with a wheelbarrow. Other times it doesn't see a car or maybe it doesn't activate the alarm. I'm guessing about a 3-5% failure rate.

You can get these for $14 on sale. I don't know about "good" but they work great for detecting critters, etc, for 14 bucks. Wireless Driveway Alert & Driveway Alarm System
I've one of these we used as a Corgi alert.

The puppy would come up on the back porch and patiently wait to come in. I put one at the top of the steps and when she broke the beam we knew she was there.

I wonder if you can use a garage door opener beam and instead of opening garage when beam is broke it can ring a bell at the house and barn at the same time

I had a beam type once. Every passing deer and falling leaf set it off.

I think the most trouble free might be one of the rubber hose sensors.

i have the Chamberlain previously mentioned. it is mounted at the head of my driveway, i have one reciever in my garage/shop and one in the house approx 250' away from the X-mitter.

works just fine, picks up cars and pedestrians which is great for me.

also picks up a dog or a deer, sometimes other critters but I would rather that than nothing at all
