Driveway Drainage/Culvert Question

   / Driveway Drainage/Culvert Question #11
Ah ...the rest of the story... So you are looking for a temporary solution? How heavy duty are these things? can you drive over them without crushing them? Use them like a speed bump (maybe half buried) angled to the side? Just to divert the water for now?

this idea seems most plausible

Honestly, you need to build that road, you have it cleared now but you need ditches and a crown. Also, a plan to divert water away from the road where you can; BEFORE it gets onto the road. The crown will push the water to the ditches. Then you need to get gravel, crusher run, on the dirt asap... compact it in. Watch the road when it rains, and see where you need fix any issues with water. If you need to run water from one side to the other, then use the culverts, both halves!

X2 of course this is what needs to be done for long term road maintenance. My idea was for short term water diversion.

I have two concerns with your idea........first is that the pea gravel will wash out......it's amazing what the force of moving water will do........i have problems where it washes 3/4" stone out....the second issue is where the road meets the 1/2 culverts.......when you install them it will be fine but after the first couple of storms that edge will start to wash out and then you will be left with a raised edge of the steel culvert which will play havoc on tires........Jack

where do you get the military surplus culverts? how are they holding up?

I would slope the road to perferated drain tile that parallels the road/drive. It is cheap and works, the reason it is used in farm fields. I would probably have a drain tile expert come in and give you an estimate. It is what they do for a living and they would do it right. Fighting erosion for years would be a pain.

I got them from an auction and they are still safely secured to their pallet!! I may use them on another part of the creek or I might just sell them. The road is in and crowned. I need to get some vegetation growing to stop erosion, but after that takes root I should be good!

A couple of swales set 45 degrees to the road will help control the water better. If you place the swales every 100' or so they won't collect enough water (velocity) to wash out.
