Dave1949, that is a great point. But, in this situation, I should have said 1000 ft. as the crow flies! The topography and/or a 5 acre pond between the two sites would make that connecting drive probably 1800' or so. I wish I could go that route, though. Because if it was a straight shot from the barn to the new site, it would only be like 600'....but I would have to build a heck of a bridge, or construct a dyke that could be driven on. Believe me, I have thought about it....

I have almost the exact same situation with a second house just under an hour away that I'm dying to move to, but the commute is just too much. My barn is ~750' (on a driveway) away from the house. One thing I can say - once you move there, you're gonna get real skinny and have strong legs! It seems that whatever I need at the house is in the barn, and vice-versa. Lots of traveling back and forth. I took an extended vacation this past summer and spent ~2 months at the new place re-doing the grounds and driveway (put 200+ hours on my tractor). With all that trudging back and forth (on top of the landscaping work), I ended up dropping 35 pounds!

I could afford to lose a few pounds, believe me. In fact, I just dropped about 15 lbs. in the past 4 months or so, and I would like to lose 15-20 more!

Ok, update on this....I've since cut a path in to my building site (just trees and brush) and driven in with my truck (didn't need to put 'er in 4wd). I got another estimate for just the dozer work today. Guy said between 400-500 dollars to cut a 12' wide swath, removing the topsoil and popping out any stumps. That's about 475' long, give or take. I know the fabric (2 rolls @ 300') will cost me $600.00 locally. And assuming I need 300 ton of material @ $8.00/ton delivered, I'm gonna have about $3500.00 and a bit of my time into this. I'm hoping I can get the material tailgate spread and finish it off with my back blade. But, is it OK for the dump trucks to run directly over the fabric in order to tailgate spread it on top of the fabric? Am I crazy for trying to save $2000.00 doing it this way?
