Looking for opinions on the best driveway sealing method. Is the gel stuff at HD worth the extra $$? My father has been letting a guy come around and apply a latex spray on his driveway. This stuff seems superior to the coal tar stuff in the 5 gal buckets, but is quite pricey. I think had paid about $250 to have about 2000 ft² sealed. And if this spray on stuff is good, is it possible to rent this equipment? The guy applying it didn't seem to be related to Robert Goddard.

Thanks.

I'm no expert but I have looked into this thoroughly. From what I learned, any water based product that coats the blacktop is a bad idea. It just sits on top and gets thicker whenever you reseal. This describes what most average homeowners do when they go to Home Depot and buy a 5-gallon bucket and roll it on by hand. I ended up using a petroleum based product that wasn't cheap. My driveway is 1000 ft and it cost $500 . This treatment is in two parts. After six months, another $500 gets you the second treatment. It is a thin material that seeps down INTO the surface to protect against freezing and cracking. After that, it is good for 10 to 15 years. I'm not saying this is the right answer, but after a complete investigation I decided this was the way for me to go. I just had it done so I can't report on the long term success.

Good luck!
