Drone for brushfire spotting?

/ Drone for brushfire spotting? #21
How well does IR from the fire penetrate to the stratosphere? I would think you should be able to get real time satellite imagery. The satellites, of course, are beign used to detect many of the fires in the west.

A couple of issues with small drones.

It would have to be pretty high to get a good view of the entire fire area if the fire covers more than a couple of square miles, although perhaps the most important area to monitor would be directly downwind... assuming there isn't some kind of circular wind pattern.

How long do the fires last? An hour of flight time sounds very short. Perhaps 8 hours in the air per shift.
