Just saw this discussion. I'm impressed by the video! I can see using this way out up north where there are national parks etc but I would be uncomfortable viewing the folks who live near me. Just don't like that. All said though there are 10's of 1000's of acres of forest and farmland around here that might be cool to look at. I go to Algonquin park each year and if the drones were silent it'd be cool to fly over the park.

Why don't you just buy enough property with a hillside so you don't shoot onto someone else's or public property? What if after you land your drone someone camps in range and you shoot them? Using 2 year old google maps for gun safety? Really?
Fill me in on your expertise at range design?

As a former Army officer and OIC at tank gunnery ranges (and now NRA-certified instructor), we had to clear a range fan of 50 kilometers. I'm used to looking at every conceivable ballistic outcome. 30.06 maximum range is roughly a mile. I'm pretty sure most people here don't own a mile downrange and still manage to shoot safely.

If there is a single human habitat in the range fan, I want to know about it, even if hitting it would necessitate firing over a ridge, which is the case. This seems like an ideal application for drone use as I can use an app to generate a search pattern almost automatically.

Going off topic but if you are building a range the NRA's "Shooting Range Sourcebook" is the bible. $20 on CD ROM.

Why are they "Drones"? Not but a short time past "RC aircraft" would have described them perfectly.

Or are they now all autonomous and computer controlled? Some might be. Those would be the real high bucks versions.

Many in the the industry prefers UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) or UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) but "drone" seems to be too embedded in everyone's vocabulary.

It would seem that a person with binoculars in an airplane wouldn't be a whole lot different than a drone with a camera. Or am I missing something?

Big difference. Drones can hover in place for extended periods of time. Planes tend to fall out of the sky when you try to do the same.

I hope that everyone realizes that this is fake. It would take several dozen quadcopters of that size to carry a weapon of this capability.

Not always.

You could look at thousands of acres of wilderness, but I think most would agree that Humans are much more interesting! Especially when they THINK no one is watching!

I keep hearing, "The D word."

Looking at the Phantom 3 Advanced. (Phantom 3 Drone - Smart Drones | DJI).

Seems like a spare battery is a good idea.
