My friend and neighbor drowned in January. Things are definitely not the same around here anymore. ****** way to die and usually so preventable.

Popping this up to the top again as a reminder.

We have already had at least one drowning on the local lake....

Here in KY there has been a surge in drownings. Seems like everyday they are searching for a body or recovered one from the water.
Its a terrible situation. My younger brother drowned when he was 18.

Should have bumped this up earlier.

I have lost count of how many drownings we have had in the last few months, not even including the ones on the coast. ☹️

This time of year seems to be when we get many drownings. I think it is because the air temperature can get hot, but the water can still be cold, a person's head goes underwater for whatever reason, they get the cold water gasp reflex and that is that. ☹️

And another... my heart goes out to the family.

When my kids were young, I insisted they both learn to swim very competently. They went on to have excellent competitive swimming careers until they got sick of it. I had them in the pool at 1+ yrs old.
My kids were swimming very well by 3-4 years old.
Can’t prevent drowning, but sure made us all feel a lot safer.

when people are struggling and at risk of drowning, it happens very quickly. My understanding is that the person can't speak, yell, or wave etc, the panic is awful

to be able to notice and respond quickly is amazing - credit to lifeguards, first responders, paramedics, medical staff. <3

our 3 kids learned to swim, when they were pre-school age, I liked the fact that the swimming lessons were at the local beach. there was no (false security) wall to grab. I know how to swim, but I would not be considered a strong swimmer. I'm comfortable in the water, and that is good for when I go fishing also... fishing rods, tackle, life jacket, boat

Recognizing when someone is drowning is kinda weird. As a lifeguard, you're sitting there in your chair, walking the beach or pool edge, standing on a raft, whatever, constantly scanning the crowd for something that just doesn't look right. It's kinda like where's Waldo. You see someone making a splash that is different than all the other splashes. Their arms are going up and down VS a swimmer propelling in a direction. And the top of their head is just under the water, their face doesn't come out. You tend to do a double take, the face doesn't come out, your bran tells them "come on. let's see your face buddy." About 2 seconds of that and "oh crap" off you go.

Surprisingly, I had a much harder time picking out victims from a pool VS a beach.

I think my wanting my kids to be able to swim at a young age is because I was a lifeguard and saw some close calls at the pool. I wanted to be a beach lifeguard in Ocean City or Avalon, but had too much to do around home.
