Tractor
A Fergie-MF 35 gas- Mf 165- Mf 6161- Unimog- Fiat 880
This is the continuation of the "living on the edge" thread. I went to pick up the tractor today, three hours drive each way. The seller kept his promises, the tractor and the snow blower was just as described. The tractor was even running when I came to get it.
The one thing he did not tell me on the phone was that it was a heavy smoker!
Blue smoke was coming through the oil sump breeder. Other than that, it was running fine.
We went home and was going to start the tractor to drive it off the truck bed, it would not start! White smoke came out the exhaust pipe, but it would not ignite. That was probably the reason the tractor was running when I came to get it! I searched the tool box and, what a coincidence, I found a can with starting fluid! A little sniff of the drug, and it started.
But all in all, the tractor looks OK. A set of new piston rings is no big deal on this little Perkins engine.

It's a shame the previous owner did not find a support group and a 12 step fuel plan.:D

Those 3-cylinder Perkins are notoriously good starters when in anything like decent condition. Sounds like an overhaul is in the cards. Looks like a nice tractor other than the engine troubles though. I cringe at the thought of using ether. Good luck with your project.

The tractor looks in nice condition :D

I don't really like ether but I use it sometimes. We have a 165 that will only start after it has had two shots of the stuff. It has been doing this for the last 20 years. It even has a hole made in the side of the bonned to get at the air intake :)

This winter I might give the old thing a little restoration...

Gunnar, there is not an ounce of procrastination in your body. At this rate, you'll be done before the weekend.:)

I'm impressed!

To quote an old MEATLOAF song: Two out of three ain't bad. :p

 How do you pound the ring lands that bad!?!? Especially on a tractor that clean? Why do I have a feeling the original owner dogged the engine, afraid to run it at high RPM?

Well, at least you found the reason for the smoke & hard starting! How bad are the cylinder walls?
