Drum mower?

Hello All

Can you guys let me know the benifits of a drum mower? Why was it designed the way it is. Less HP to run compared to a rotary blade style? etc. etc. Thanks.

Drum mowers were designed before disc mowers. They can be manufactured cheaper because there are less moving and complex parts than a disc mower. A shaft drive disc mower will actually pull with less HP than the same size drum mower. The oil bath cutter bar design does take 20%more HP to pull. The cost will still be more for the disc mower.
Both the drum and disc mowers mow in the same manner and use the same type blades.
CCM has drum mowers for as little as 20 HP and has HayMaxx disc mowers for as little as 25 HP PTO tractors.

Drum mower is most popular mower in the east europe. Therefore, the competition is so big in that area (especially in Turkey) that its price is very low comparing the prices of other mowers. I think 95% of mowers in this area are drum mowers. So, spare parts of drum mowers are available easily anywhere. These mowers (drum mowers) are mostly used by real farmers who mow the grass/alfalfa/etc they grow for the animals.
