It's its season and I just wondered why this mower isn't so popular in North America. Why? Its price too is great (a month ago, I bought a 5' drum mower and paid only about US$900. I believe 4' would cost cheaper) Comparing its performance&price to other mowers, I think the drum mowers should have been popular all over the world. Are you sure that the farmers' needs direct the market or is it the sellers' need that controls the market? So, we can say farmers' need for drum mower is much less than the sellers' need, hence drum mower is less popular there?

I would have to say drum mowers are great if you are mowing hay to bale. But for brush and just getting the grass down in rough areas, stick to the hogs.

Nomad; what's this 5 foot stuff?? Hobby ??

The area I'm familiar with has 20 foot plus self propelled swathers with a hay crimper. Heck 5 feet is just a midmount mower!! My little B7100 kubota can even handle that.

Oh, by the way, I know a fellow from Istanbull called Chris. Do you know him?

Rdbrumfield, I agree. The hogs are better and cheaper than the drums. But the bush hog isn't available in this part of the earth. I guess this (non-existence of different types of mowers) is why the drum mowers are very popular here unlike there North America. To mow the hay to bale, as Egon said, there must be larger machines like 20ft.

Well, Egon, of course this 5' is for hobby only - to attach it to my old MH74 which is another hobby tool. I am trying to use older technologies that will fit my old friend MH, hence the drum mower. Chris? I know every corner of Istanbul (really) a city with a population of 15million people because I had lived there for 10 years - but I can't remember him. Which Chris is he? Ps: By the way, why are some people above are frequently OFFF-Topic?

CCM is trademark protected and can not be used without approval. If you are selling rugs with CCM on them you are in violation and you must cease and desist from any distribution of our trademark.

You are always offf-topic and people aren't understanding what you are talking about.... anyways - back to topic.

As many know, Agri-Supply (ASC) sells tousands of implements, etc. But I don't see any drum mower on their web site of ASC - Now, I really believe the drum mowers not so popular there in North America. Indeed interesting.

Nomad, I just saw this post. In my area, you need to have a crimper/conditioner on your mower if you are a comercial producer in order to dry the hay fast enough.

No one I have spoken to knows what a drum mower is up here. I'd like to buy one to try as disc mowers work well here. Seems much simpler than a haybine type mower.

I will be doing such little hay the reduced maintenace would be a real benefit.

Drum mowers aren't for commercial hay makers. However, definition of "commercial hay making" can differ from place to place. While a small hay maker can be considered there noncommercial hay maker he/she can be considered here a commercial hay maker. Also, drum mowers are usually used here for mowing the grass, the clover, etc. Another thing why drum mowers aren't much popular there is that you already have the disc mower (unlike here) and when you have the disc mower you don't need the drum mower. However, the advantage of drum mower over the disc is lower price of drum mower (I just paid $1000 for a 5'6" new drum mower a month ago or two.) Disc mowers are $2500-3000 minimum. Add a conditioner, this price will be much more. But I am thinking to add a conditioner to my drum mower. It will be a simple home-built system.
