A trick i used during the past few winters was I would take a mop bucket of my sand salt mixture after i had been in and out the drive 3 or 4 times and sprinkle it by hand on the tracks.
I would start at the garage walking down one track and throw it on the track in front of me, this way I was never walking on a slick surface. When i got to the end of the driveway I did the same thing on the other track coming back the drive to the garage. Probably didn't take me much over 5 minutes to do arount 150 to 200 feet of driveway.
You don't need a solid trail of the mix covering the whole path.
I sprinkeled in patches 2 or 3 feet long leaving about 2 or 3 feet beteen patches. It was plenty to get up the driveway with ease.
