I am on cable, so take that with a grain of salt.
I have a pcx1100u modem supplied by the cable company. When they first brought it out, they installed it to my computer. Problem was, my email came in on my wife's computer, so they hooked both to the modem. One CATV (I think) and the other USB since the modem supports either. What the cable company didn't realize, was it supported both, not either. So we literally had a router that gave us two IP's. Somebody figured it out after a few years and they sent software over the cable to stop it. Had to upgrade to a router. Since I spend quite a bit of time across the street on my MIL's computer while the wife visit's, I wanted to be able to hook up over there. It is marginal but at just over 500 feet the D-Link wireless does the job, provided the receiving card is sitting in the window sil. I have two computers upstairs at the other end of the house and one across the street and the one in my office. Never a glitch, never a problem and simple to set up.
As far as wireless working in a log home, my computer geru has a two story one in Gulf Breeze and computers in most of the rooms, except the bathrooms. I can check if anyone wants to know what type he is running.
