Carpenter...

Let me say this..

Most not IT professionals are clickers... and not lookers..

In IT we fix enough stuff that we read almost EVERY pop-up window...
And often we say no to most chek boxes..
Click yes or ok to the wrong one, and BAM-- you just installed some application!!!!

So she did not knowingly install it.... or maybe you did it..

But regardless it is an issue that needs solving not blame....
Give those links a try and see what happens...

Defrag---- NOPE..

On a computer as you work on it and save files..

you write data to the hard drive just like a notebook...
then you delete stuff... it goes back and erase things.. and leaves blanks in the space..
Sometimes a new files is partially on page 2 then some on page 20 and more on 137 and then 199 etc... Defraging takes that new file and rearranges the hard drive so the the file should be all on page 12 or something..
but makes it contiguous.... this speeds up the PC.. Just think about it when you read the newspaper... Page 1 continued to page 6 then to page 7......

Now the smaller free space on the hardrive the longer it takes to defrag....

make sense?

Yes it makes perfect sence, it's just organizing my information right?
This is gonna sound really dumb, but I went to your link and clicked on windows xp method 1 : Method 1:
Use the Properties of Your Local Disk

1. Open My Computer.
2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4. Click Defragment.
I can't find where it says "defragment now" any ideas?

TIA, now I know what it feels like when someone tries to explain to me what is wrong with thier car or truck. LOL

Ok I'll give it a shot thanks
My computer came from "the computer clinic" which is just a small computer fix it business in my town. It's funny you mentioned best buy, cause I remember when I bought my computer the guy made fun of the "geek squad" at best buy. He talked they were amatures. LOL

That cracks me up!!
Computer clinic...

As a full time computer consultant, alot of my customers hire their helpdesk staff from Best Buy's geek squad....

heck-- A few times I have learn a couple things from them...

We have hired a couple of folks from there for placements in help desk jobs...
not just a PC tech... But someone that takes calls from all over a company to handle any kind of computer issue....

So that is really funny....

anyway-- to each his own...

I got distracted from my computer concerns by the sudden death of a refrigerator, but now, a few bucks lighter in the wallet, I am back to thinking about that newer device no one can live without. Thanks, RadarTech, for all the suggestions. I'm going to implement as many as I can and see if my old computer responds. Of course, I should replace the old box with a new one, but keeping food cold came out on top of being able to spend money more quickly online. However, I did just order the $15 part that stopped the old refrigerator online. Now I'll have a refrigerator in the basement for important stuff....maybe I should move the now faster computer down there, too....right beside the new beer cooler!

Schism,
I have seen this alot on virus/spyware infested systems...

Lastly, if those times are around the busy time of day---- Lunch (11-1 local time) after dinner (6-8 local time) or early work day (7:30 - 9 local time) then they are just oversusbscribe and I would complain...

i agree, but not on my system. and yes ping spikes on my service are related to "peek network usage times"

for instance, my internet slowed to a crawl tonight (like youtube would only play about 15 sec busts with 1 min wait to buffer the next part) from 18:30 (when i started montering) till 23:00 my avg ping was 800. ( it would bounce between 300 and 1000+, as the router is saturated and bumping packets)

promptly at 11, it mostly settled down to a manageable 65 ping. ie the kids next store with some virused up computer finally shut it down for the night.

ive complained, i get "yes we know, we expect latency to increase and DL speeds to drop durring peak times, Because its PEAK TIMES"

as we have no other choice of a high speed internet provider in this area, your stuck between craptastic service (they have no incentive to upgrade there network) or no service. (and no i get 2 bars of cell service in the middle of my front yard and im WAY out of 3G area)

you pick!
