We have DSL here at work. Qwest as part of the package gives the modem out to you. If you cancel your subscription you give it back. Part of the deal. You will really be happy with the DSL especially if you have dial up right now. Wish I could get it at home.

We had to too. The DSL goes through the modem and in to the PC network card.

The old style modems are not fast enough. The DSL modem is needed to work with the data rates available with the DSL .

But, yes, it seems eveerything you buy these days has some add on or limitation; cars, mobile phones, cable, ect

Yes, there is a DSL modem involved. Just like any other communications technology it has a specialized protocol, electronics, etc to make it work. Think of DSL as another languange and you need a translator to translate the language into your native language.

I have had dial-up, cable and DSL at home one time or another. Out of those 3, I like DSL the best. The only issue I have with DSL is that you have to have filters on all of your phone jacks that have phones connected to them. The phone company charges $20 a piece for these. I have phones in all of the rooms in my house except for the bathroom (of course). I think I may go with one of the new phone systems where you only have a base plugged into the jack and all of the cordless phones in the house use the same base.

I've read, with DSL, you can connect up to 1.5MBS.

Now, what kind of connection speed can I 'really' expect?

Generally speaking, since all the phones in a house (on the same line) are wired in parallel at a junction box somewhere, what prevents someone from taking a single filter and placing it upstream of the voice lines? See attached diagram.... Just curious...

I have seen ones made by Motorola, V-tech, Panasonic & Siemens. I think Siemens is probably the best but very pricey. I will probably go with Panansonic because I currently have one of their 2.4Gh phones and it is pretty nice plus they have the new 5.8gh with the new systems.

DSL used to access the internet is a federally tariffed, regulated offering. DSL speeds cannot exceed 1.5mbps, but the actual speeds provided varies from telco to telco. Most telcos choke their DSL speeds down to 256k or 128k. You might find a few that sell a 512k speed, but not too many. I'd ask the ISP or telco what speed they choke their DSL down to.
