DSL

DSL comes in different tiers. As your upload and download speed increases so does the price. I have a download speed of 784 and it runs about $50 a month and I pretty much get that speed most of the time.

I'm by no means a DSL expert but I've had it for over 2 years and this is based on my experience and conversations with the phone company.
The reason you can't hook it to a central point is that, DSL uses the exact same wires that your phone uses. I believe it is a different frequency and you cannot have the filter at the beginning because you would then be filtering out your DSL signal. In my home office I have a splitter coming out of the phone jack and on one side I have a filter with my phone hooked up and on the other side I have the DSL line going to my modem. You may be able to do what you are talking about but you would almost have to run a separate wire from junction box before the filter to the DSL.

Now, what kind of connection speed can I 'really' expect? )</font>

It depends on:

1) which of the two flavors of DSL your telco is providing, and

2) the length of the wire (phone) wire connecting you to your Central Office, or wherever the DSLAM equipment is housed.

1.5 meg is the best you can get. about 500K probably the worst. If you are too far (more than 18,000 feet) you get nothing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am looking for a new phone system, too. Who makes these?

Mike, I've mentioned before that we bought the Panasonic Triple Talk, model KX-TG2383BP, from Sam's Club a year ago last November; liked it so well we got our youngest daughter the same thing for Christmas that year. I'm sure there are many other brands and for all I know, some may be better, but we're well satisfied so far with ours with the following features:
3 Cordless Handsets and Only 1 Phone Jack Required
2.4 GHz Digital Technology
All-Digital Answering System
Intercom between handsets
Handset Speakerphone
Call Waiting
Caller ID

Or you can do what I did and that was to bring a dedicated phone line into my home office just for DSL. Since my house is already wired for ethernet I did not need filters, etc. Just connected the ethernet to the home hub. The downside is that I pay extra for a phone line but my phone company discounted it because it is for dedicated DSL.

I did the same thing. I had a dedicated phone line for my dial up connection and when I could get DSL, that's the phone number I switched. I followed this same process when I implemented DSL in the offices at the church I attend. Separate line that has no voice devices (phone or answering machine) makes life much simpler. Well worth the extra $20/month. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks to Bird, et. al, who recommended phones. I think I will have to go with the 5.8 ghz phones since I have read that the 2.4 ghz phones interfere with wireless networks, which I have at home.

It is entirely possible to put one filter at the head in on the phone line, typically you will only have one DSL modem connected to the line so put the filter where the line comes in and run a new line for your DSL modem. If you need more than one computer hooked up get a Linksys router.

Since I don't have a wireless network, and have no experience with them, I know nothing about that, but can certainly understand why you need to take that into consideration.
