Thank you so much! I checked out the northern tool link but most of the reviewers said it wasn't loud enough. I want it to ring so I can hear it when I am working up in the hills. I am jsut going to call gadgetshack since several people here have mentioned them.
I still son't knwo how to hook up the loud ringing bell but I am thinking gadget shack will tell me.

I went and visited a few local hardware stores over here and didn't find what I wanted. Also the internet here is terrible. You go to allt hese website for home security systems and alarms and they all do not list prices. Send and e-mail for the price, they are so behind the times here for actually selling over the internet. I might try Amazon.FR. I have an account with French Amazon, I think I'll take a peek over there also.

Yours was the winning suggestion! i actually talked directly from the factory and ordered directly from the factor in South Dakota. The people there we soooooo nice. I had e-mailed and called www.HomeSecurityStore.com and they were not that great. The guy answered my e-mail with a one sentence reply whihc did not address any of my questions, then when I called I was on hold for a long time, then when I finally talked they needed to research my needs and get back to me.

I called Dakota Alarm direct talked to 2 tech staff who knew what they were talking about and a most outstanding Customer Service Rep named Hillary and it is a done deal. The system is legal in France. With this sytem I can add on and I relaly did like thier personal receiver. Me or my husband can carry it/wear it around our neck while we are int he outer fields and if someone rings the button Push for Service and we don't hear the loud rining bell we would know by the portable base unit. Plus I was very happy to buy American. I spent $258 and got the base unit, which includes one IR emmiter to place down by the gate, one box that will be for ring bell for service and then the extra large bell. She described for me how easy it was going to be to connect the bell to the base unit, "Connect the red wire fo the bell to the red wire at the back fo the unit and black wire to black wire" Plsut here are instructions on exaclty how to wire that exact bell to the exact base unit. That was a big worry I had, in the advertising it never said if you could connect the outside bell to the base unit or not. This way the manufacturer specifically shows how to connect the two differnt products.

I am excited to get this over here in France I am positive it will be a big help to us. Often times I am stuck int he ouse when I would rather be outside working becuase we are expecting a truck to come for a pick up of an order. Now with the loud rining bell we should hear. And if that doens't work we can also add on later.

many thanks to all who posted. I was in a crucnch to decide and order as I want everything deliverd to my mom so that when we get there all my purchases are already delivered. Better call my mom and tell her to expect deliveries.

Again many thanks to all. TBN is always the best resource when you need to know something of which you know nothing about :p

Rox I'm glad you found something that will work. I guess I missed the fact that you're in France.

I opened up my Dakota WR-3000 receiver box and took out the small instruction manual - that's where I store it. The 1/2" stripped bell wires push into a terminal and are tightened down with a Phillips head screwdriver. The connections are plainly marked on the pcb and in the manual. The receiver box is the size of a paperback book and hang on two screws driven into the wall.

The bell or horn can be set to operate for either 4 seconds or 10 minutes. I guess ten minutes is for putting a light (12vdc 400ma max) on it.

The transmitter operates on 433.92 MHZ and has a maximum range of 3000 feet.

You can test it, but I'm thinking that if you have the terrain and the the push button transmitter is small enough, you might consider getting another one to carry with you when you're working alone in the hills. Then if you get into big troubles, you can sound the bell.

It's interesting that you opted for the infrared transmitter rather than the hose. Around here I have lots of deer wandering through and I was afraid that they might set off the infrared unit.

Thank you ragkar- I really appreciate that you went and looked at your unit and it should be no problem for me to figure it out. That is what the sales staff told me but it is nice to hear it confirmed from you. Actually that is not a bad idea you have abou getting and extra tranmitter. I think/hope I'm going to like this system. I have half a mind to call them back and see if I can be a distributor in France and sell over the internet. At every French website I visited none had prices listed. The only site that did list prices was from Belgium and the prices were very high. There was nothing at the hardware stores that was near this good at near this price poiint.

I can always add the rubber hose later and move the IR to an area where hunters enter, which is very unsafe for us. For now that is the most I could spend and in the future I can add on.

Does it say in your documents what radio frequency is used? Just curious I'm looking up the european standards for what frequencies can be legally used.

Thinking about your situation I suggest
mounting the infrared transmitter well forwards of the gate - perhaps on the back of a Welcome sign.
Placing the receiver in the house and drilling a small 1/8" hole though the wall so you can mount the bell on the side of the house. Then the chimes will sound in the house and simultaneously the bell will ring outside.
Taking the pushbutton transmitter for a walk into the hills to determine the range. Then you can decide if you want a second pushbutton unit to take with you for emergencies. A cell phone will work for you too, but if you have an accident and are in pain, it's difficult to focus on dialing a multidigit number. On the other hand if there's only one button to push it's easier.

I've looked at these MURS types of systems. I found the Dakota system good too. But what I would really like to find is a similar system but has a solar power (battery backup) transmitter. The Dakota goes through one battery per month I've read. Anyone know of such a thing?

Ragkar- Many thanks! I searched on 433.92MH + France and found where they are selling garage door openers wiht that number megahertz so I should be all set then. We are excited to get the signs from Kinkos and then the rest from Dakota.

Pirate- Well if they suck batteries then I'll just have to get one of the lithium long lasting batteries.
