On yesterdays death of at least 13 and hospitalization of 7 more in the capsizing of the duck boat on Table Rock lake near Branson Mo.
The news people keep saying the storm "came out of nowhere". Total Bravo Sierra. BS. We had a 24 hour warning that strong storms would be possible. Our cell phones went off saying about a severe storm at least an hour before it arrived here. The storm was tracked on radar coming down from the northwest, just like every storm is tracked on radar. I was "playing radio" with a friend about 50 miles away, and he announced he was going to shut down and turn his beam antenna into the wind. At that time the storm was some ways off from us here in Branson. As it came closer, I shut down and did the same.
I unplugged all of my equipment and turned on the TV to watch the weather. There were plenty of warning from Channel 3 (local TV station in Springfield Mo) As they often break into normal programming to give updates and warnings and show Radar.
I continued to watch and wait when the gust front hit us. It was severe. After the storm passed, I went outside to look for damage. No real damage other than limbs down. All my antennas stayed up, and as near as I can tell the shingles stayed on. I had no idea that anyone with any brains at all would be out on the nearby lake.
When outside I noted the temperature had dropped almost 30 degrees.
The death toll stands at 13 dead 7 injured 2 critical. But 4 are still missing and unaccounted for.
1: why on earth wouldn't the operators have someone looking for the weather at all times that storms are called for? We ALL have smartphones in our pockets and can see the radar in a few seconds. Anyone with even the smallest of brains could see this storm was severe.
2: Why do news-people say stupid things like "the storm came out of nowhere. " how does that help? In my mind the duck boat operators are liable. But the passengers did not utilize the tools they all have in their pockets to have a look at weather conditions before going out on a lake either.
3: The storm didn't come out of nowhere, I was aware of it for at least an hour and watched it and tracked it on my phone and TV and waited for it to hit. Why couldn't the duck boat operators do the same? They have radio communications with the duck boats. We were all warned at least 24 hours earlier about the possibility of severe storms.
4: By all accounts the employees of the duck boat did all they could to save the passengers as did some of the employees of the Branson Belle which was docked also jumped into the water to try and rescue people as did others. The driver of the duck boat was one of the causality's.
