Roy.....read my earlier posts.....ole Phil was under contract.....he was paid big money to keep those opinions to himself. He chose not too and is paying the price. I agree with you...he has the right to say whatever he wants....but...A&E also has the right to suspend him. As for the Navy.....I did spend time on a Navy vessel.....I still don't agree with your perspective. In fact....I would be willing to bet that some of those you served with were....in fact...gay...they just didn't talk about it. With that said.....I appreciate your service.

Well said!

In listening tonight to some of the things Phil Robertson said in that interview, he does seem to promote just about every stereotype about ignorant bigoted bible thumping backwoods rednecks... at least since Deliverance.

How can he be so ignorant of the overwhelming evidence that blacks were not happy under Jim Crow laws? I'd say his point defines willful ignorance.

Why the focus on gay sex? Did he forget that the bible condemns sex before marriage as well? Did he discuss the passage in the bible where women who are not virgins at the time they marry should be stoned to death?

Read a transcript of his 2010 sermon in PA for further details.

He's not coming back to mainstream commercial TV. No sponsor would risk the association.

I heard he and Paula Deen were going to do a cooking show together?

The Robertsons will get along just fine. Phil just paraphrased from Scripture, things that Jesus himself said and taught. If people have a problem with this, they will answer to God, Phil was just a messenger. Somehow I don't think Phil is getting too worked up over this. A&E has shot themselves in the foot.

So has God if Phil is the best messenger he could find!

Jerrybob, love you man.... love you... In a brotherly way, of course...

It is interesting to me how supporters of the clan feel this is a 1st amendment issue. Explain to me how is freedom of speech has been impeded in any way? And I really mean this. Can someone change my mind on this?

2nd, how many men cornhole their wifes? Given the statistics I hear **** intercourse shouldn't be a deciding factor in sin these days.

As for the Navy... I get the uncomfortable part of your concern. Don't get the aids part as you can't be in active duty if you have aids. Now you could say a gay man in the navy runs a higher risk of contracting it, but I would bet if you look at hard numbers, you will find (not in percentages but real numbers) more straight guys getting aids than gay in the navy. My rational is that I have traveled the world, and I have seen a number of these ports sailors go in and, well, those ports and the girls that work them... man... not for me... wouldn't risk it even if I double bagged.

Probably shouldn't but I'll weigh in on this again.

The DD folks are fundamentalist Christians who take the Bible very seriously. I should know - I grew up on it and am still surrounded by it. It doesn't matter to them whether they personally feel homosexuality is ok. If Paul said it was a sin in the Bible - then it's a sin to them. They are standing on a principle that the Bible is the inspired word of God and if it says it's a sin - then by God that's that! They may themselves be homosexual but that doesn't change that principle.

Now one could argue that Paul was writing his own opinion based on social norms of the time, or that the Bible itself needs to be interpreted based on new knowledge, or that the Bible is an antiquated document that was written for a people and place far removed from ourselves, but I doubt your going to convince someone who interprets the Bible in that literal framework.

Just for the record - the DD guys are nice folks as it goes - and I consider their comments pretty tame - I mean - have you seen the Westboro Baptists?

A&E are naive if they are shocked by this mess. Kind of wonder why the PETA folks haven't weighed in more.

Theres nothing fringe or fundamentalist about his statement. I know the Baptist church and Catholic church (#1 and #3) churches in Usa have this exact same belief. I have heard that some Methodist churches have said they will do gay marriages but i think that was a very contested subject within there own church. Dont think anyone can call Catholics or Baptists "Fundamentalists" or atleast what that word invisions with Fundamentalist Islam and all.

I'm sure Mr. Robertson was under contract...neither of us have any idea what that contract stipulated.
The GQ interviewer asked him a question...he responded. All well within his rights and there was nothing in his responses that was hateful...just paraphrased the Bible.
A&E folded from pressure from another group that pushed the homosexual lifestyle. I expect A&E will regret that decision...

When you write "I spent time on a Navy vessel"...were you on a 6-8 month cruise? Did you berth in enlisted quarters or officer quarters? There is quite a difference in privacy (none in the enlisted quarters). I know there were homosexuals in the Navy...but it was a lot more discrete as homosexuality was a court martial offense.

I hope the Robertson family tell A&E to go ****...

I'm sure A&E has a clause by which they can fire/suspend him, standard fare. Now, for another topic, if this that he said is so hurtful and outrageous, where are those loud voices when Christians are relentlessly pounded and demeaned in everything from sitcoms to late night, as well as the ladies round table shows in the afternoon? Why aren't these bastions of civil rights screaming bloody murder when conservatives are bashed? Why is it OK to promote homosexuality but not to resist it?
As for Phil and the DD folks, this will cost A&E a lot more than the Robertson's, they don't need the money, yet they will be raking it in for years to come, from product sales, speaking and TV, radio and print media. This guarantees it. So A&E, please stand on your righteous principle of supporting gay morality's tiny minority and ignore the huge Judea Christian majority, but do so at the peril of disappearing back into the little cracker box this show helped pull you out of.
