I would also suggest the 'buy a hen' idea. Howard would soon be busy chasing the hen around and you will enjoy the duck family as well as possible edibles down the road. Duck eggs are good eating, and well, the freezer does have space for all them extra ducks. Doesn't it?

Thomas, a R.I. DUCK IN arkansas? The water level has came up over a foot in my little pond. The White river has overflown its' banks since day before yesterday. I'll try to get a picture tomorrow. I have raised many little wild wood ducks that I have saved from hungry cats.

Well the first week for Howard has been fine. My two dogs still want to eat him (actually, one out of the two does [he is an English Lab @65 lbs...perfect hunting dog]). During the day we let him roam the property, however, he makes one loop around the house and then plops down in front of our glass sliders; pecks at the window like he wants to come in the house, but, when we open the door for him he just stands there. My wife wants to get another duck/mate for Howard. Probably wait for the weather to warm up before we do that. The only complaint is all the droppings on the deck. I'm use to my dogs running into the woods to do their business. I guess when the pond melts and I relocate Howard (and his mate) there it will be a mute issue. Still no flying though...Any suggestions on how to teach him to fly???

Don' have any idea how to teach ole Howard to fly! A lot of folks think that flying should come natural for a wild duck, but like many other wild creatures, they learn by watching other of their kind when they are young. Howard was pobally incubator hatched and raised as a pet, so he never got any "duck learning". He dosn' know that he is even supposed to fly. I would just leave him domesticated. good luck with the ducky doo doo!!
