Backhoe Dug up first stump

/ Dug up first stump #21
I've dug up a few to large for the loader or the hoe to lift out of the hole .... used a chain and drug them out. Once out, most can be shoved along with the FEL if you are careful .... otherwise, just drag it behind with a chain or burn it where it sits.
At the time, the 710 c was not available to me or I would have got that stump out in less then a hour. The backhoe is 22000 lbs. The fel would have no trouble lifting the stump out. I think the backhoe boom would lift it out. The backhoe is huge.

When I bought my first tractor, a BX-23, I had a heck of a time digging out a big oak stump. Once the major roots got severed, I used a chain to drag the stump out of the hole.

When we first moved here we burned wood. Just for fun I attempted to dig out one of the Ponderosa pine stumps. After a day and a half of digging, sweating & swearing - I gave up. The stump was 38", was half a mile from the house and looked just fine sitting there. It took about eight years for it to rot out. There are other pine stumps that I know were cut over 100 years ago and are still pretty solid. Location, location, location - if the stumps are in an area that is naturally dry year round - my great grandchildren are still admiring them.

I had good luck with fire, you get a bag of charcoal and stsrt it in the middle of the stump. With bit of attention it will burn to roots.

My Dad used to put a couple of old tires over the stump and set them on fire. They burned hot enough that the only cleanup there was, we had to pick up the wire rings that were in the bead of the tires. We can no longer use that method as it is not allowed to burn the tires that way.

I remember watching dad blow out stumps about 55 years ago. That was back in the day when if you wanted some dynamite you just went to the hardware store and bought some. It sure blew those stumps and big wads of dirt way up into the air.

When I was a kid I remember watching a local farmer do the same thing with beaver huts and dams. Nothing like watching a couple sticks blow beavers into the air. They kind of look like a frisbee spinning around as they come down. At least the ones that didn't turn into mush.

Guy I ground stumps for last week just texted and asked for 'dinomite', called a 15" dia stump 'big'. Said 'tricky' because it's so 'close to the water'. I asked if he preferred 'messy' to 'tricky'. IMO, properly blasting an ash stump that size might increase the size of his ~25' x ~40' 'pond' by 1/2, and all I have is some Tannerite.

btw, poor guy has to settle for my T5C for now vs the JD 310 TLB he dug the 'puddle' with, decried my stump-digging tips after lamenting its lack of 'crowd power' and/or 2WD 'push' when digging a settled pile of topsoil. He's "dug thousands of stumps" on his former job, but T5C is no Case 585.

"Use enough Backhoe." ;) (I'll 'grind' a few more for him ...)

Update: retired 'operator' got used to the little Terramite, did 'daily' service like the old days and says it's running better than ever (more like 'learning curve' with the 'mini'). 'Big' stump dug out ok after all & I'll go for pics this aft.
