Dumb Hydraulic question

before i ever do anything, at the start of everyday, i take about an hour to check over everything. when your doing that, your looking for any leaks, or anything that might be out of place, and if you know your equipment really well, you will know whether or not something isnt right and should be fixed/taken care of immediately, which will cause you from having a bigger problem in the future

best to check your fluid levels BEFORE you ever start running your equipment.

Yes that is obvious, what this post is regarding is adding on a backhoe attachment which doesn't contain any of its own fluid, it draws fluid from the tractor's system through the rear remote and returns through a connection plumbed into the loader valve, so one must run the tractor and operate the rams to fill with fluid while keeping an eye on the fluid level in the tractor to keep topping it off. Checking it before doesn't do me a bit of good as it is obviously full until I connect the empty backhoe, its going to draw down from there.

Just remember to always park the hoe with cylinders in the same position when checking fluid level. It takes more fluid to extend the rod than retracting it so this can change your check level.

Now that is a good point and one I didn't think of, I wonder how much fluid the hoe actually takes in with outriggers down and boom extended with the bucket curled, I wonder if this draws down the hydraulic too far, I wish I would have gotten the pto pump instead then I wouldn't have to be concerned about this stuff.

Some relative cyl capacities, extended volume.

bore stroke gal

2 in 30 in .41

3 in 20 in .61

4 in 24 in 1.31

Check fluid level with cyl filled.

Extended will use more fluid than retract,

Heat will expand the fluid also.

If you add up your maybe 7 different cyl volumes, that will give you an indication of fluid required.

When you park the BH, the two of the BH cyl will be in extend mode, unless you like to stretch it out on the floor.
