Dumb Mutt, Skunk Guess The Rest

So our dumb dog (look it took him 2 encounters with a purcupine to figure out they weren't toys) is now learning about skunks.

Any suggestions as to how to get the smell out of him? My wife believe a dog's place si in the home.

My neighbor always said if the dogs get sprayed by a skunk, to wash them with tomato juice. I don't know if it works, but his dogs were sprayed once, and he said it did work.

Pet shops sell some products that work well, such as Skunk Off, or Odormute. In a pinch, go to the drug store and buy a few packages of Massengill Douche, original formula. Bath the dog in this an allow it to stay on the coat. It might take a few treatments, allowing it to dry between treatment to neutralize the odor. Not every treatment works on every dog. It has to do with the type of coat that they have and their normal skin oils I believe. If you want more suggestions, go to this web page and read all the suggestions there. I have heard of some of these in the past, but some such as rolling the dog in sand is new to me. I have been fortunate in never having had the problem, but I do have a well stocked store at my disposal 24/7, so it isn't a problem for me either.... good luck and let us know what worked for you...

A couple of vet friends recommended this procedure to me after Belle was sprayed about five years ago. We tried the tomato juice first but it didn't work that well. I still have four cans sitting on a shelf in the basement just in case.

The formula at the linke with hydrogen peroxide, dish soap and baking soda works much better.

Our dog Rex got sprayed once /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. My wife washed him twice with tomato juice ( in the BIG cans) and he was rid of the smell.
A week later my son saw that he was up to something. When he approached Rex, he noticed that not only had Rex killed the skunk /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif BUT that he was also eating it /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif! YUK!!!!!! Gerard.

Here is a formula that was copied from the thread.

+There are commercial products on the market that claim to remove skunk odor. Tomato juice or vinegar is said to be helpful in neutralizing the scent. A mixture of 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4-c. baking soda, 1 tsp liquid soap has also proven effective in eliminating the odor.

+ Another formula for neutralizing skunk odors on pets and people is: Put a quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide in a clean plastic milk jug, add 1/4 cup baking soda, and a tablespoon of dishwashing soap. Shake gently. Gradually pour on, add a little water at a time, and let foam up for a few minutes. Rinse.

Don't have any idea right now what it is, but we have some shampoo from the groomer that gets rid of the smell after 3 washings, one right after the other. Buddy has been sprayed twice. Hope that never happens again, but it will /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
