Don't worry you can't burn out your pump. the pressure will limit at the relief setting. The fulid will heat quickly in the transmission and could eventually damage seals due to overheating, but you would smell it.

I guess my reply from yesterday didn't make it online, but I was mistaken about burning out the hydraulic pump. I talked to our mechanic yesterday, and he said basically the same thing as Techman. Leaving the lever in the up position will cause the system to divert the fluid through the relief. All that fluid going through the relief will add heat to the system, and it's the heat that could eventually cause damage.
As for me knowing what I'm talking about, there are a lot of people who know a lot more than I do, but thanks for the complement.
