Dumb question for the Arborist out there .

Ive got a lot of Maples on my property . Most turn to a golden color this time of year . But , a few turn flame red . Are these different types of Maple ?? Some are within a couple of yards of each other , so soil doesn't seem to be in the equation .

Mrs AndyM was wondering the same thing yesterday also...
We have oak tress and hickory trees all over the yard, but she wants to plant some maple trees next year in the front yard. Trouble is, she only wants certain ones, because she noticed that different maple trees turn different colors in the fall-- she only wants the "pretty" colors.

Somehow, I'm going to screw this one up and plant the "wrong" kind of maple trees! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

actually 3 or 4 trees of same type and size and even produced form the same seed will have diffferent colors. it has to do with many many reasons much the same as each child of same two parrents look different... DNA I guess .

anyhow even the same tree will look different year to year. one thing about mother nature it can't be controlled...

Jap Maples are mostly RED start to finish. with smaller leaves. nice but also dont grow very big...

I have 2 different varieties of "red" maples that we bought just because we wanted the red fall color; they turn color at slighly different times. Sugar maples turn bright yellow in the fall. Some varieties turn orange.

These trees would probably be grafted?

Most plants are pollinated by windblown pollen or by insects carrying pollen from plant to plant. So a seed from a plant may or may not produce a new plant similar to the one it came from.
I have often read that if you want to know what color a tree will be, go to a nursery in the fall after the trees have turned color. Then you can pick the colors you want. However, that doesn't always work. A number of years ago I was in a nursery in the fall. They had a sad spindly little tree about 6' tall that had beautiful flaming red leaves. I would not have considered it except for the color. They were trying to clear their inventory and I think I paid about $7 or $8 for it. Grew into a really pretty tree with some fall color but it has never had the bright red color it had that fall I bought it.

Autumn Blaze comes to mind. I believe my neighbor has two in front. I am pretty sure that is what he said.

I don't think so. I bought and planted both of them about 5 years ago, but there are literally hundreds of varieties of maples that have been derived and most all are hardy down to -10F, many down below -20F and I believe that most of the varieties are based on cross breeding native plants rather than grafting for color, hardieness, or disease issues. I believe grafting is more common with the Japanese maples?
