Dumb question: how much grease is left in my grease gun?

/ Dumb question: how much grease is left in my grease gun? #21
G'day and welcome to TBN from Downunder.
What a great question to ask! Heck, I needed the blokes in 'the shop' to show me how to load the bloody thing... this question must have been lurking in the back of my mind ever since. Ta!

You'd be surprised how many people don't know how to use a grease gun or even how it works. But, there's nothing shameful, or, as the OP said, "dumb" about that. That's why it's called learning.

On another note: Your avatar reminds me of my ex-wife... nag, nag, nag, nag, nag. Lol!

Hey Tracting,

Welcome to TBN!

I wasn't sure myself whether opening the gun would cause vaporlock or not, but it sounds like as long as you pull back the rod, it shouldn't lock up.

Since we're all here, I have another grease gun question.

We bought a pneumatic grease gun (Campbell Hausfield from TSC) and despite adequate pressure and being full of grease, we cannot get it to pump out any grease.

It makes a phutting sound each time you pull the trigger, but no grease comes out.

We tried purging the air using the purge button on top, but no grease comes out.

(Instructions read "Hold while activating trigger until grease is emitted.")

Can anyone help with some useful advice on how to get this to work, or should I assume that the gun is f'ed and exchange it for a new one?

Tracting, sorry for the thread-jack, but I thought it might also help others like your? helped me.

Happy and safe tractoring,
Thomas

There might be a push button purge valve up on top cap by the nozzle. You would depress it while pushing in on the plunger to clear the air.

Ok.. now please don't be upset, but I have to ask.. did you pull off and discard the "pop top seal" off of the grease cartridge?..I know that sounds stupid, but I actually failed to do that once when I was in a heck of a hurry, and of course no grease came out.

I have one of those CH grease guns. I never could get it to do right.

I am a shop teacher- and one day a kid picked up the grease gun and started unscrewing the cap. I stopped him and started to do a class lesson on how it works and what "not to do"- as everyone gathered around, I picked up the grease gun just to have the last thread let go and it explode all over me! Shirt was a goner! But the lesson on how to change the tube went great!
