Has anyone tried cutting a barrel top off with a Sawzall and the proper blade?
I use a jig saw or a saws all with a metal cutting blade to cut out both of ends of the barrel .

I can't speak for everyone, but I don't burn GARBAGE. I burn paper, cardboard, etc, to keep from filling up the garbage cans.

As in my first reply, I use one of these: Super Duty Air Hammer with Chisels Come on guys, it's only $15. Why do ya'll make it so hard on yourself? ;)

Some people just can't see the light. :D

And some people probably don't have an air compressor powerful enough to run that chisel, and some might not have a compressor at all.

1*What's all this stuff about cutting off the barrel ends? 2*Sounds like the hard way to me.
3*I get barrels which have one end held on with a ring. Remove the ring and the lid comes off.
4*Then lay barrel on it's side, hit the sides at the other end with a pick in several places and you have ventilation.
5*Stand on rocks with the open end up, fill with trash and light.
6*Here in rain country, a barrel lasts about 5 years.
1~It allows for a more thorough cleaner complete burn because of a better draft.
2~No:just the better way.
3~I don't care if a drum has sealed ends or not as long as it's free.
Sure you can remove the lid but you still have to remove the other end too.
4~This method creates 2 problems water soaked unburbed trash build up which cause vent cloging and more unburnt trash.
5~In time this will plug the vents and leave water standing in the drum.
6~if you can keep it dry.

I've been living here for 45 years and have tried all these methods for setting up burn barrels.

I've discovered this set up has worked out the best for me.

The way I decappitate a barrel is it hasnt had any flamables or has been purged is with a grinder. I take a 4 inch grinder and set the drum up on the end and grind the top of the seam of the drum. Sometimes it takes a hammer to get it loose. It makes a nice resealable barrel. my trash barrel and charcoal barrels are like that almost air tight.

To make this easier Ill grind the seam out and I have an adapter that lets me plug my garden hose into it and it will push the lid off. I burn wood scraps, and paper. usually I take my house hold and noncompostables to work and put in the household dumpster. Since I run a rubbish landfill Fibeglass and other stuff the goes under class 1 rubbish also goes to work. We heat with wood and I have a 300 gallon tote tank outside the shop that any wood scraps go into if their not treated or get turned into charcaol for the garden. Ashes from the heater are a lime substitute that go into the garden and lawn.

The burn barrels now are mostly used for getting rid of junk mail.
One burn barrel I fixed for a freind he had the drum off a washer and we ground off part of the porcelin around the rim to and welded it to the bottom half of a drum with bothe ends off. It got great air flow.

Drive ways I use my box blade or double bladed grader. Every once in a while to refresh mine Ill bring the grader home from work and rework it down deep after a long rain. M drive is only 100 feet long but a longer one is on the lower acreage.

It's illegal to burn garbage anywhere in the USA, though enforcement of the federal clean air act is left to the states and compliance varies.

They are trying to put a tax on cow farts also.

That is hilarious! Once the government figures out that cow turds are flammable, they will be slapping a fuel tax them. They would probably call it a patty tax.

LBrown59, all I get is ash in the bottom of my barrels. Plenty of draft. Holes go from close to an inch or 2 from the bottom up several inches. An advantage to leaving the bottom in the barrel is that it's easy to move the barrel to where ever you want to dump the ashes.

BTW, when the fire is out, I put the lid on the barrel, so little water gets inside--just rain that blows from the side and that ain't much. If it did, it would just rust out the bottom and I would have a barrel with no ends like everyone else, so, no problem!
