Re: Dumbest (most unsafe) thing you\'ve ever done?

Feb 2002 2:00 am, plowing sidewalks with my B7500 & 2019 power angle front blade. I broke the drivers side mounting pin, as i pushed the broken half pin out with my left index finger the plow shifted & my finger became the pin! Im on my knees now ,stuck in my tractor plow, very cold, already have heard the bone snap, that pins & needles feeling is gone & now i cant feel the finger at all! Just as im about to pull my finger off (freaking out) i said to myself take 3 deep breaths and think, it was only after i took this little breather that i realized i had my nextel on my belt. I called a couple of guys i was plowing with & they got me out & got me to the hospital. Snow plowing is a dangerous gig, i was 30 hours without sleep and my thinking was not clear when i put my finger in there!

Re: Dumbest (most unsafe) thing you\'ve ever done?

I can think of many dumb things that I have done. But the one that is always fresh in my mind, is me hitting my left hand middle finger with a 3 lbs dead blow mallet. I was setting landscape garden wall blocks in place. Just put that finger right in the way of that mallet for no reason at all. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Do not think it will happen again. Finger still gives me a pain every time I pickup any kind of hammer. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Dumbest (most unsafe) thing you\'ve ever done?

I also have done my share but I remember being a young teen ager and all my neighbors and I had motorcycles that we would ride on some trails near our home since none of us where old enough to ride on the road. We came up with a game where we would get off our bike and hide in the brush with a flashlight and wait for one of the others to come by. When they got right up on us we would stick a bright flashlight in there face and blind them causing them to wreck and then get up and do it all again. I don't remember any of us getting hurt in all the years we did this. At least not seriously.

How about playing Army with your friends?

In a nearby cemetary...

With BB guns!

No, no eye protection. Why do you ask? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Dumbest (most unsafe) thing you\'ve ever done?

My older brother used to do the same thing, except he got blamed (not sure if it was him or not, there was something like 12 kids all aiming at one another) for hitting a kid in the corner of his eye. The family sued my parents and won. It was an ugly time for us and the kid. His eye was never the same.

On that same level there. We used to have "nail fights" where we'd go to a new home being built and start throwing 16 penny nails at one another while we hit and ducked behind the stud walls. Hard to believe in hind sight.

Re: Dumbest (most unsafe) thing you\'ve ever done?

I have many, but this is about my friend and his son. My friend is at work and he gets a call from his son. Son say Dad help me I'm pinned under my car. Dad is 25 minutes away and asks what happened. Apparently the tires were still on it, but the car came off of the jack. My friend doesn't panic or call 911, he asks his son if he can reach the jack, son says yes, Dad says jack the car up. Son crawls out happy as heck, a little sore, but ok. I've known this guy for 10 years and I've never seen him get excited.

I was in a car that a guy on a bike passed doing that, I'll never forget it. Luck conquers all. For a while.

Re: Dumbest (most unsafe) thing you\'ve ever done?

O.K.... one motorcycle story.

I recall being the passenger on a souped up early '70s Kawasaki H1 doing 130+ down a local 4 lane... facing backwards hugging the sissy bar to my chest and screaming WWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It was even more fun facing backwards when the driver does a wheely... you see the pavement REEEAAAAL close-up like! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Stupid stunts like that make me wonder how I survived my youth with all my digits, face still intact and never a broken bone in my life. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Copperheads (snake)--hands only. How many can you pick up. Double Dog Dare ya. So dumb and surprisingly, not a single bite. Some serious jumping when you mis-timed it though.

Re: Dumbest (most unsafe) thing you\'ve ever done?

Late one Sat (like early Sun) 3 of us drive home in a buddie's '55 ford wagon.
None of were feeling any pain.
I am in frt rt seat, buddie is driving and the third fellow is sitting on the open tail gate dragging his heals on the asphalt watching the sparks fly from his boot heal 'irons'.

The driver misses a turn, the car does a 180 deg, goes through the fence and promptly buries the tailgate in the soft ditch.

The tailgate rider was thrown foreward when the driver braked hard and in the spin process he got wedged sidways in the back and not ejected being wedged.

The front seat collapsed backwards dumping us on top of the wedged buddy.
All three of crawled out and fell into the fresh dug ditch and climbed out with wery wet muddy bellies.

To get the car out we dismantled the wood fence to fill in the ditch and drove away much more sober than when we arrived.

The ditch was full of POISEN IVY and the three of were scratching for days in that sensitive area located from the navel to the thighes!
Between the three of us I think we cleaned out 3 drug stores of all the calemine lotion for the month!

Try keeping still while talking with a sweet thing with that kind of itch! (and my office had a good selection)

Just thinking of that episode brings back the itch.

Re: Dumbest (most unsafe) thing you\'ve ever done?

This one is watersking:

In the '50s we'd ski at the drop of a pin but naturally you need a boat driver, skiis and a rope.
Lacking a proper rope we used a clothes line and the volunteer driver was new at it.
I tell him to lean foreward until the boat planes and then sit down.
Naturally the rope decides to break and the driver is thrown out.
I am tredding water with my skiis on watching my unmanned boat head to destruction on the rocks, but no, the vibration makes it turn to the right.
The turn gets tighter and tighter!
The path is unpredictable!
Great it will stall in the weed bed!
No, it turns some more and heads for the huge HD dock that we departed.
I wonder if the dock will split or if the boat will crumple?
No!
More turning and it glances off of the dock, almost stalls, and heads for me.
Now I am scared as that is one sharp prop blade.
Do I dive or what?
Still have the skiis on.
At this point the boat is real slow having bounced and as well the throttle creept back as a rule.
What I do is tuck my knees and when the boat is alongside me I lunge upwards using the skiis as a 'platform', grab the center deck with my left arm hooked under up to my armpit (like no way can I come loose) and reach for the kill switch.
Only problem is that my legs are flopping around under the boat and heading for the prop.

My left foot feels the center keel and I instantly think -"Let it slide along the keel until it hits the motor foot and then put all my pressure on the front of the motor and that way I'll be in control"

Well, it worked..With a well hooked arm and firm pressure on the motor, I was able to keep the other leg well away from the spinning prop.

I killed the motor, climbed in, restarted and headed back to shore.

Calmly tied up the boat, sat down and started to shake for about 30 mins.

Oddly during the whole event I never panicked, just sort of analized the event as it unfolded and did what made sense at the time.
Guess it did, but phew.

Re: Dumbest (most unsafe) thing you\'ve ever done?

if it ain't broke, take it apart anyway

That cracks me up as I have that reputation as well!

Hey, we got to learn!

Besides I never could afford manuals when I was younger and how else could you see how it was made!
