dump trailer modifications?

hi guys... what if you parallel install a velocity fuse in conjunction with an orifice to control the speed, the oil flow when the dump is empty will flow through the velocity fuse but if the extra weight in the dump causes the speed to increase it will cause the velocity fuse to close causing the oil to go through the orifice valve there for controlling the lowering speed??? I am using a dump trailer but with tractor. Since the tractor has remote hyd with more capacity and more convenience to it's controls than the trailer's set it to plug in to tractor. If that is your set up you should be able to control the drop by the lever movement easy.

I guess I didn't mention that the hydraulics are completely self contained - 12 V electric runs the hydro pump. Choose that so that I can use it with truck (on the road) also with no modifications. I will try and get some pictures to post, but it might be a few days. would be nice to vary the speed down since I'm sure different loads would need different settings. Thanks, eveyone - I'll check out some of your suggestions in the meantime.:)

If you use it with your tractor a lot and your tractor has remote hyd I think you will be surprised how much quicker and all you can do so from the tractor seat. If you care to do so and still use the current set up you will need to install some quick disconnects and probably a set of hoses to run from pump area to tractor.

For my use it was really worth it. We were dumping a load at least once every 10 minutes and the switch I know saved 30 to 60 seconds per load and was safer as holding a button was not required. If you are only running a load once in a while stay with your set up.

A velocity fuse would be a good idea to stop flow from exiting the cylinder in case of a hose break which is what theyre typically used for. For this application however I would use a pressure compensated flow control with reverse free flow sized appropriately for the line. A pressure compensated flow control as opposed to a plain needle valve will compensate for pressure variations in the line while keeping the flow rate relatively constant which means that your dump trailer will come down at the same speed every time and because of the reverse free flow check you will not impede flow into the cylinder to raise the load. A velocity fuse will slam shut causing a huge pressure spike and potentially blow up a hose, its used right at the output of the cylinder to eliminate downstream spikes and is an emergency use valve.

I would go with this valve because I like the manfacturer but you could use any other brand you like or have available. go with steel not brass.

install it RIGHT AT the inlet of the cylinder or as close to it as you can, that way if a line breaks you will have an automatically controlled descent.
