Dump trailer?

You didn't say what your need was. I've had a bumper pull dump trailer for 8 years or so. It can be handy although like others have said, ours has never met it's specs for dumping a full load.

Yes, I can get a big dump truck load of gravel for about the same cost per ton as I can haul it myself. That's a no brainer if I need 15 ton. But if I only need 3 ton, well the trailer is handy.

My local stone yard will bring me 20 tons of gravel for $30,
Do you mean the cartage and material cost is $30? Around here any kind of delivered gravel is at least $10/ton and goes up to $20. I can't see how someone could support running an 18 wheeler for $30 loads, even if the material is free.

Nope - we pay the same price for the gravel if I drive there and get it in the back of the truck or they deliver it, just pay the $30 to have it brought to the house. (about 20 miles round trip) They don't deliver with a tractor trailer but do have a tri axle and duel axle style of trucks. Heck I used to pay $25 but it went up recently (can't complain).
That is the reason why I skipped buying a trailer, it is VERY reasonable to have it delivered and the fellow that delivers it will tailgate it in for me with the truck which works great. The company is a smaller locally owned business and they are great to deal with and very fair! We buy all of our mulch, gravel, top soil, etc from them due to the way they do business.

If you are going gooseneck I would get a trailer with 8k axles or just go with a tandem dually. Just sick it up and get the cdl license too. A 14k gooseneck will overload too easily I think. I have a Camsuperline deck over dump. Sides drop down. I really like it. Painted not powder coated. Be careful with the size of your trailer. I was going to get a 14' trailer. The 12' trailer is 5.3 yards. I figured if I had a bigger trailer I would be too likely to overload it hauling heavier materials like stone. So I got the 12' and put sides on it for hauling lighter material.

Thanks for the info gentlemen. I found a 20,000lbs tag Hawke brand that had a 20' bed, dual tandems that was wrecked. Thinking about buying it for the axles and lift. Build a new shorter frame with a goose neck since I have a good 7' 8" x 14' bed with fold down sides. I do not think I would come close to loading the axles with this size bed.

Before you go that route, check your state laws. If you license that thing based on the original manufacture's plate, you might need a CDL to haul it since your GCVW will be over 26K. Some states require a CDL for a rig like that, others do not. Seems like I've heard that NC does.

You are correct Ken. You are good truck and trailer up to 26,000. Luckily due to my job I have class A CDL and a medical card.

If it has 2' sides that would be an 8 yard trailer. You could overload it with crushed stone or sand or loam if full.

A few years ago I did a lot of research and ended up buying a 14 foot gooseneck dump with dual 7,500 lb axles and 2 foot sides. It is made by a company called maxey

http://www.maxeytrailers.com/images/trailers/65/65.pdf

I have hauled everything from my kubota l3940 with the loader bucket, grapple bucket, 6ft rhino shredder and 6 ft box blade all tucked inside just cozy... As well as gravel, sand, road base, fire wood, trash and everything in between.

Only once did I have to climb inside and toss some of the heavier logs over the side from the front when it couldn't lift it.

Just last week I had to weigh my duramax 2500hd and the trailer empty then full with some sand and the whole thing was at 25,400 which was at the outside of my comfort level but it towed just fine and the electric brakes did a fair job of stopping.

With a little caution it can be kept safe and was right around $7,000 if memory serves me a few years ago

I use my 12 footer slightly different. I have a hitch on my grader blade and use my L3940 to haul it around the farm. When I need to move dirt I use my Case 580 to load the dump trailer. Then I use the Kubota to haul it where I need it dumped.
