Looking around for an old junker dump truck.
I see one that has "electric over hydraulic" lift. All I've ever known is pto. What's the differance in operation or why would you like one over the other?

Electric over hyd is simply an electric motor powered hydraulic pump. PTO is usually powered off a specific transmission. Limits vehicle transmission options. PTO may be stronger & faster than some electric lifts.

Another design point is the lift ram: scissor type may lift more vertical clearing wet clay, a straight ram type may lift more weight.

I have a 1 ton dump that is electric/scissor type & have dumped gross overloads easily around the yard no road travel.

Can't beat an old Mac DM or similar. If your terrain is like mine (hilly, prob not like OK), 4wd is a must. In tandems, 4 or more wheel drive (beyond the tandems themselves) is rare except for those made from old concrete mixer trucks.

I've always heard "electric over HD" brakes on mid-Macs (200 series smaller single axle) were trouble, so I'd wary on the one you describe.

I'm no expert here, see what everyone else says,

Jim I hear ya on the DM Macks. WWe have 3 at work at our landfill. We just changed 2 over to late model fiberglass tilt front caps. When dad was in the rubbish business he got our first DM for 4500 with a bad cab but it was our winter rough truck. My brother has an R model dump. The electric dump is good for landscaping and dumping intermitantly they burn up with alot of heavy use like hauling a load of heavy wet clay 100 feet and dumping and repeating it every2 minutes. We had a driver on a haul like that but he also had a 6 yard bed. I just bought another dump bed a 12 foot flat for use with my 95 F700 It has a scissor lift but Im not fond of them on a ling bed so I bought some a load of new goodies from a yard that scrpped rejects for Heil. Im makik it a telescopic hoist.

Good replies! Thank You.
Am looking for a small truck like a f-350. Would like a "big honkin motor" in it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif But I keep seeing some like f-250 with v8 350 engines and passing them by. I'm worried about a 350's ability to pull my car hauler with my ck30 kioti tracktor on it. And of course the f250's ability to haul any load. Am I justified worrying about this?

Truck will be used to maybe haul some gravel in, and trips to the dump, and of course, around the property..

No sweat on the 350cu to pull tractor/trailer especially with creeper first GST.

There are a lot of 1 ton dump bodies around here with 4x4 and a snow plow blade on them. Most are pretty well beat used by hired help in landscaping businesses.

My search ended at a local auction with a '93 6.5 turbodiesel 5 sp 48K mi. A retired business owner bought it to pull old cars home & restore them.

Newer ones have more power but there are constraints. First is a trailer over 10K lbs requires the driver to carry a DOT medical in MN. Over 26K combined weight rating puts you into CDL A drivers license territory.

Mine is 12K truck and 13.5K trailer rating. I generally drive it around the engine torque peak which is 1800 rpm and 52 MPH in overdrive. It'll go 70+ but controlled stopping is what matters. The truck weighs 9K empty in front of a 12K trailer and never felt unstable. Engine power is a factor on hills but keep it in perspective - all that traffic is behind you /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Pushing a button to dump a load sure beats shoveling it out of a pickup /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A new F150 has a 9900 trailer rating... must be bureaucratic magic /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Keep us posted on what you buy

At 52 mph, they may get mad enough to knock me off the road! hehe

Here's an example of one I'm a bit scared of for too little truck with a 7000lb trailer..

Cute litte green dump truck

They can't see or breathe well enough behind me on a long uphill pull to get mad because that old underpowered chebby is smoking like an old freight train /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

That short wheelbase would be more nimble around the farm. Simplicity of something that old is a +. Parts are easy to find @ LMC truck & others. You can find specific advice on Ford & dieselpage.com forums. I signed on the Chevy one for a year or 2 when I first bought the dump to learn the nuances.

Weight and duallys help avoid being pushed around. That truck is probably enough for a 7K trailer. Question is how much more do you want?

That 3/4 ton 350 should have no problem hauling your 7K trailer and tractor. Just make sure your trailer has brakes preferably on both axles. The only problem that arises is if you fill the dump box with dirt or stone etc. then load the tractor on the trailer to tow it you'll be over the truck weight limit. To haul a load in a dump box plus tow a trailer with a tractor on it you'll need at least a one ton minimum or larger size truck.
