Duramax: 2-month impression

One of the car mags, I think Car and Driver, just did a test on the big three diesels. They liked the Duramax the best. Its pretty funny to me, but the Dodge made over 800 ft-lbs of torque, but they said it was behind in the power department. Any modern diesel makes more than enough power.

Yep- I second that. When is enough, enough?
As far as turbo lag- that is the nature of it. As you learn the truck, and how to maximize driving it, you will not trounce on the throttle, but slowly roll into it. That way, you build up boost at or before the high demand for power. You will feel it, and realize the effect.

It seems to me, and I have only driven them a few times, the New Fords really shine in the turbo lag area with the Twin Turbos. My 06 F-350 is just about the same driving experience as the dozen or so Dmax truck I have drive.

The reason the Dodge took such a hit in the testing by Car And Driver was it was just so much slower up the hills, 0 to 60, 30 to 60, ect.

The 6.4 with the sequential turbos was pretty bad as far as turbo lag. My '08 F-450 w/6.4 would hesitate for a few seconds before it would take off. The single turbo on my '12 F-450 w/6.7 has almost no lag, it simply takes off. All these trucks make an enormous amount of power, you have to tow with one to really appreciate how much power they make.

Thanks for the write - up.

On the tire pressure, in my '08 Chevy 2500 the front tires run less than the rear. Check the sticker in the driverss door for recommended pressure. I think the warning from the TPM comes on around 10 psi less.

Just towed my wife's Yukon XL on my tandem axle trailer with a combined weight of 15500# and trailer weight (without tongue weight) 7080# as measured on my local aggregate hauler's digital scale 400 miles.

Tow vehicle was my 2007 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Duromax crew can short bed 4X4.

Most efficient speed base on fuel consumption actually 70-75 MPH Highway. Driving 60-65 gave less fuel efficiency.

Averaged 16-18 mpg highway crossing Adirondack then Berkshires, but mileage fell as low as 9-10 mpg in traffic (providence, Albany, Worcester). Total trip fuel economy 13 MPG. Not bad for a truck loaded to the gills with four humans, 3 dogs, and 127,000 miles on the odometer !!!!!!!

Of course you could argue we only did that well driving west to east, and the earths rotation was in our favor, and at least halt the trip might have been down hill!!!!!
