There is a body of thought in some science circles, that oil is a natural result of earth's mantle. While we have all been conditioned that oil is "fossil" fuel from critters and vegetation, it may be actually a product of the earth processes called Abiotic, which occurs very deep in the mantle then secretes upwards thru bedrock cracks and collects in more porous sedimentary rock layers. This would also support why we continually find newer sources of crude. And when one ponders the amount of oil that has been extracted since the 1800's worldwide, it becomes quite a stretch to reason that it all came from animal and plant matter alone.

Hence, traditional crude oil may in fact be a "renewable resource", with the earth generating constantly over time naturally. It would shoot in the foot, the idea that oil is a finite resource. Cornell University Physicist Thomas Gold and Giora Proskuowski of the University of Washington School of Oceanography, among others, have made compelling cases that crude is primarily a result of natural internal earth processes.
