These are two incompatable statements. Noise doesn't have to cause pain to damage your ears. Length of exposure is also crucial. Do a Google on: decibel noise exposure limits. Cummulative low intensity noise can be damaging.

Wear ear protection, even at 1700 RPM.

I recently had a hearing test following an infection. They found that I have lost some of the high end in my left ear. I told the audiologist that I live on a farm, and she asked if I used implements like plows where you look back a lot. I do not, but she said that left ear hearing loss is common in farmers, in her experience, because of the looking back to the right with the LEFT ear toward the engine. YES, I do use hearing protection now, even thought I used to think it was wimpy

Went to the doctor when I started to notice some hearing loss. After the test, they told me the loss in the high range is normal for someone my age. My doctor said that this is the same range as the female voice and it was Gods way of protecting men. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
