That is very nice looking workmanship indeed, just needs a little orange paint to finish it off. ;) Honestly though, I can't decide if I need one. I'm at a bit of a loss to understand the benefit of this attachment vs. a standard boxblade. Edumacate me please!

You are thinking wrong about this piece of equipment. It's not designed to level grades. It's primary function is to transport dirt with the additional ability to dump it relatively spread rather than in a pile.

Let's say you want to build a shop building and your lot is flat or low and has lousy drainage. You hook onto this attachment, go into the back forty where there's a good supply of clay dirt, and start hauling!!! Think how much you could move in each trip if you also had an FEL on the tractor!!!

I think it's awesome!!! But what I'm struggling with is the jealousy I feel because I can't build something like that!!!! Wow!!!! I think this man has created a profitable commodity!!!! It will move a tremendous amount of dirt in a day with minimal work on the tractors part, and move this dirt however far you wish!!! Awesome!!!

It's a professional looking machine, it just needs paint indeed... I like thermally zinc coated protection, but in this case i wouldnt do it because it will crack...
The front torque tube that attaches the side plates to the drawbar, probably just a square box tube with a wall thickness of estimated 5 mm, is in no relation to the side plates of the frame, which i guess are 25 to 30 mm thick. The thinner material will heat up and cool down quicker than the thinner tube walls causing hair cracks in the material and over time, tearing off at the welds.

Off course it wouldnt matter with just cold paint instead of a 450°C zinc bath, but i still think the side frame plates are a bit oversized... I assume this guy wanted it thi way to make it heavier, to make digging in hard soil easier...

Very nice piece of work. :D

They are available commercialy, sizes unknown, and used in irrigation districts to bring fields to the proper grade by moving dirt. Many other uses for them too.

I would surely like to have a small one but doubt my little tractor could pull it. :)

Got it... it is for those 'in-between' dirt moving jobs... too far for blade draggin', but too close for the dump trailer! The only downside I can see to it is you might have to knock down a big dirt pile before you could drive over and scoop it up. I like the spread out dumping capabilities, but it still seems perfect for shaving off topsoil or leveling gently rolling topography. Cool, decided I DO need one. :D

The unit is the dump trailer.

The unit self loads by lifting the apron and lowering the [bucket/pan/scoop] and pulling it. When full the apron is closed. When you reach the dump site lift apron while travelling and the dirt will fall out.

It may get more interesting in certain types of wet sticky clay.

Most larger units have a hydraulic slide to help push out the dirt.

Dozerman: Do you think he needs a stinger?:)

Now I need one of them, I could put it to work now.I have a lot of dirt I need to move for the yard and that would do it.

You're basically correct. I recently moved 2000 yards of dirt with one. I learned that you can create a level grade, but it requires a lot of extra work. You can dump the dirt first and create a rough grade. Then you pass over it with the pan empty, and the blade just low enough to skim and drag the rough dirt. After a few passes, you end up with a pretty acceptable grade. The one I used had 4 wheels, and a fairly long wheelbase. The longer the wheelbase, the more level the grade will end up.

The strong point of small earth movers(as you said) is they are great for picking up and moving dirt short distances. The down sides are, tractors are slow, and are really the pits for moving dirt more than 300' or so. If you speed up enough to get a lot of work done, the rough ground created by the earth mover will beat you up pretty bad.

Great work by the way. It looks far more rugged than the 2 yard unit I have been using, although the twin dump cylinders on my borrowed unit are far heavier.

Hey Bob how about posting a picture of the pan that you borrowed for comparison.

KansasKid ditto on the plans/blueprint. I have a L3130 too has he used it yet? Is the 3130 able to handle it? I have a couple duck ponds to build this may be the ticket!
