Eastern Cougar or Panter

I found this on a Google search:

The State Animal:
Florida Panther

The most endangered of all Florida's symbols is its state animal, the panther (Felis concolor coryi) which was chosen in 1982 by a vote of students throughout the state.

The Florida Panther is a large, long-tailed, pale brown cat that grows to six feet or longer. Its habitat is usually the same as that of the white-tailed deer, which is the mainstay of its diet.

Yes, thats the florida panther. I know florida has them and so does USFWS, its no big conspricy down there, everyone knows they have them. They have a breeding population, but no they are not Black. They are cousings of the western moutain lion but have some differences in genetics.

Here in Arkansas, game & fish dismiss most of the sightings as bobcats,
or a large feral cat.

In a conversation with a US fish @ wildlife biologist (from a neighboring
state), He has no doubt of the exsistence of Mt. lions. He said the
problem is that when the state game & fish acknowledges the exsistence
of these species, they have to form and carry out a management plan.
Its easier and cheaper to deny........

There is little doubt that these cats exist.

What I want to know is how the **** can you be arrested and prosecuted for killing something that is already extinct?:D

I've seen two in the last 20 years here in central Alabama. One solid black and one a modeled color.

I personally seen one coming off the Golf course in Enterprise Alabama. Head to tail he took up the entire lane of the highway. Classically tan colored witha LOOOOOOONG tail.

Ive heard several reports from LEOs of seeing a black one around Daleville.

About 35 years ago I saw a black bear in Berkeley county, SC. Most people didn't believe me, but at least the dog who was with me did. Now most people agree we have black bears here.
About 25 years ago I saw a coyote. Now most people agree we have coyotes here. About 15 years ago I didn't see, but I heard a big cat. It was dark and I heard the growl which made the hair on my neck stand up. I'm convinced they are here.

I don't know if what we have is the Eastern cougar here in East Texas or the Western so called mountain lion...but we have big cats!!

I have personally witnessed one in my hay field playing the classical cat and mouse game just like a house cat would play....pouncing, jumping, wiggling back and forth before making the pounce, etc. I watched it several minutes and then called my neighbor over to see it...and in typical East Texas fashion, brought his deer rifle to kill it...fortunately the big cat left before he could get off a shot saving me from a difficult confrontation with this well meaning neighbor.

The story goes on....we loaded up my coon hound in the pick-up and drove down to the hay field to see if we could get some tracks....and this is the honest truth....my coon hound jumped out of the truck, picked up the scent, and then turned and jumped back in the truck refusing to get out. I've never seen or heard of anything like it before or since. Yes, we did find some great tracks, proof positive of the big cat we each saw. I'll never forget it.
