3-Point Hitch Easy way to store your Auger

I did that when I first got my auger, but went to hanging it once I saw all the rust on it and figured that was a big part of why the cutting teeth got dull faster then I think they should have.

Interesting comments so far. I'm going to take mine off this weekend and in the past have hung it from a large swing set in the back yard. I had considered digging it in like was suggested but I dont' like the idea of the rusting.

I absolutely hate hooking this thing up as IMO 3 point hitches are a joke compared to switching out attachments on construction equipment. I cuss and tell my wife how dumb farmers must be to think that 3 point hitches actually work well. Between the 3 point being difficult to get hooked up and on top of that getting the PTO shaft hooked up, not to mention no down pressure 3 points are pretty far behind even a skid steer when it comes to ease of use.

So why is it that nobody takes off the bit? Am I missing something? Seems like without the bit they would be much easier to manage, store, and hook up.

Why don't people take off the bit top store?

It is easier to just slip a chain around the boom near the gear box and let it hang

I'm in the process of building a rack to store mine - eventually it will probably have casters, but for now I'll build it with cross runners so I can get the pallet forks underneath it if I need to move it.

I'm also building a separate rack to store my auger bits in - I have three: 9", 12", and 24" ... so the rack for the bits will have three spaces to facilitate changing them out ... one of the spaces will almost always be empty (because the auger will be stored with whichever bit was used last)

I think it makes sense to store the augers upright ... makes it fairly easy to change them out.
