ebay snipping

Knowing the exact date and time doesn't mean I can be online. If it ends at 0200, I'm going to be sawing logs. If it ends at 1400, I'm at work.

I've done it both ways, usually with proxy bids. If I get I get it, if I don't I don't. Gotten some great deals.

If it's the same dealer with the drills contact him or her direct and see what price you can get it for. You might be surprised, this works very well. That is now how I get my gloves and earplugs from one company and my safety glasses from another. After all that is why alot of business are on e-bay to get some next to free advertising.

I strongly agree with the Proxy bidding crowd. It is a perfect defense against sniping and requires less effort. I would presume that we all have a maximum amount in mind for any given item. If we use that to place a proxy bid we're home free. The only time I ever "sniped" was by accident. I saw an item with a few minutes left going cheap and quickly placed a bid for a dollar more. I was outbid by a proxy bid and time ran out! Works for me. I might also mention that the kind of stuff I look for on e-bay (tools etc) there is rarely a bargain out there. I usually go out there, find a product and search the web for it. I can almost always buy it cheaper that way. People bid too high.

One key thing is when to buy as well. The week between Christmas and Newyears some good deals can be had on ebay. Also the first couple of weeks in Jan as well. People are all strapped from Christmas buying.

I've bought quite a bit of snap on tools during this time. A few chainsaws as well. Usually they go for a bunch more money at other times of the year. Oh well the secret is out now./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Like any other auction you win some you loose some.

I have mixed opinions. I have been sniped on items that I really wanted, but that's just how the game is played. I do think esnipe, oracle, and those types are clearly being unfair.
However, early bidding ONLY DRIVES THE PRICE UP. If I'm a buyer, why would I give the other guy 5 days to think about his bid amount, and GIVE HIM TIME to decide he'll really pay more for the item.
I believe the true auction happens right when it gets down to the wire. I'll wait and bid when it get's to about a minute or less. This, by my definition, is not sniping. It keeps my bidding from driving the price up (bidding war), and gives time (not much) to someone who really wants it more that I. IF YOU REALLY WANT THE ITEM, YOU'LL BE THERE WHEN IT CLOSES.

I'm not familiar with how E-bay works... on buying, can someone explain how payment is made, what is the procedure to register, how do you receive the merchandise, what happens if it's absolute junk {not as described...}, what recourse do you have...?

Then of course, how do you sell and list items?

Buying sight unseen seems to be extremely risky... I've from the old school where I have to feel, smell, touch, taste it... kinda put it through it's paces to determine a value for me... /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I've sold items on eBay but never purchased anything. The buyer sent me a postal money order. Once I received and deposited the MO, I went to one of my favorite places (good customer service and nice people) Mailboxes, etc. and shipped the item UPS. Then I emailed the buyer the tracking number.

J.M. III,

eBay is just the mechanism for getting buyers and sellers together. You get a good/bad feeling about sellers (and buyers) by their "Feedback". When a sale is completed, the buyer and seller "usually" leave feedback for each other. Positive feedback is worth 1 point, neutral is 0 and negative is -1. For each person registered on eBay, you can see what their feedback rating is, as well as read the feedback that has been posted by others on that user.

The higher the feedback rating, the more "warm & fuzzy" feeling you get about trying to buy something from that person. It works well, but then again, there is no guarantee of satisfaction.

I hope that helps explain some of your questions.

John

There is an element of risk but as Dave says you can read the feedback of the seller. I would not normally be inclined to bid if the seller had a zero rating and I think most people tend to feel the same way as the final bid price of items sold by a zero rated seller tend to be quite low. That said, everyone has to start with a zero rating and I once took a chance and bought a brand new CD/RW at a really good price./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I have mainly been a seller and noticed that as my rating increased so did the price I got for the items. I have this philosophy in life, I treat others as I would like to be treated myself. Granted, I am sometimes dissapointed but when you have a positive experience it makes up for it.

Franz,
By telling bidders I will end whenever I feel like it, bidders will either bid or not, but I feel it will encourage action.
Maybe, but seems like your swimming upstream. I don't think you have a problem with late bidders, you have a problem with the rules on ebay. This weekend I purchased an item on ebay in the last few seconds (I have won the contest for slowest link on TBN). The high bid @ the time was $45. My bid was $61.51. The auction closed @ $61. My bid forced the high proxy to maximum ($60). The bid minimum was $1. I won for $61 (high bidder). Seller earns 25% more as a result of my participation, without which he would have received $45. I played strickly by ebay rules. Suggesting I did something wrong is the same as telling me how to spend my money. Examine the bid record more closely and add up the amount the "snipper" has put in your pocket. Auction record available on request. (yep, I did say auction)
