So essentially the issue was you were not able to pull hard enough to turn the engine over but the neighbor was. LOL.

…..or Varmint didn't have any carb cleaner:laughing:
Glad it's running for you. I bought one last year, my first non Stihl saw. A great saw for about $350!

I have one as well. Works great for me.

The 490 is a real nice saw for the money. But let me drop this bomb on you all: Echo CS-501P.

Chainsaws, Professional-Grade Chain Saws, Top Handle Chain Saws | ECHO USA

My understanding is that the 500P has been discontinued. The 490 (lower priced version of 500P) will carry on, while the 501P will move into the "pro 50cc" slot in Echo's lineup.

I have not run a 501P, but hope to soon. Looks like it will be every bit as powerful as the Stihl/Husky pro 50cc saws while weighing less.

Well, I could pull it over, but after 10 or 20 yanks, I burned out. No firing... Whatever it was, we think a tiny bit 'o crude blocking fuel (jet?) it is now history. Saw starts like a champ, runs well, cuts better. I am happy with it, again. If this problem arises again, I do have carb cleaner, as well as an old can of starting fluid, which I think is basically ether. Just hadn't thought of it- never needed it before. I thought using canned gas for the "final" run before storage would take care of fuel issues. Dah.

FWIW, neighbor, who has two Stihls, was impressed with the Echo. I did replace the original "safety" chain with a more aggressive cutting chain. Bought some chaps and kevlar gloves, while I was at it. But, being careful and avoiding dumb moves is still the best safety item.

Best of all, the saw was $176, essentially brand new. I was happily surprised when my high bid on eBay got it. I think the seller was not happy with it, because the chain was faulty- had two right cutting links in a row, causing it to pull a bit to one side no matter how you sharpened it. Which is why I replaced the chain. In any event, it looked like it had run less than 20 minutes- no saw chips around the drive, chain looked new, or any other signs of use beyond some scuff and one missing bar nut.

$176, You suck.

Just kidding. Sounds like a good deal.

You will run into cutting links right after another at times. It must be just how the spacing works out.

I ran my 620P Echo yesterday for a little while and I noticed that even though it started like it should it took a lot of torque to spin it over on subsequent pulls. I think a little guy would have trouble.

I'm glad you got it going but now I need to pay more attention to my fuel.

I can get thru one compression stroke only, and that's with effort.

Bob, believe me, I stick my foot thru the handle and stand on it... I struggle to jerk the pull cord thru one compression stroke, and two seems un-obtainable! Like I am suddenly weak,

Well, I could pull it over, but after 10 or 20 yanks, I burned out. No firing...

This story seems to be "evolving" as time passes. I think were were all under the impression that your first 2 quotes gave which was it would not turn over, not the third which was turning over through 10+ pulls over but not firing.

Yes, there is a bit of seeming miss-statement in my posts. When I first tried to start it, it was very hard to pull, I thought, and I felt like it was only going thru one compression stroke, and even with effort almost to slowly to start. As time and attempts went by, and smaller toed boots allowing better foot holding, I could only get a full pull (two compression strokes?) with extreme effort. It does seem easier to pull now, but again, it starts or at least fires which might make it seem easier? I was simply writing my impressions, if you will. I can't explain beyond the "fact" that it must not have been getting any gas until we sprayed it with carb cleaner. In hindsight, it did seem like something was preventing normal starting pulls, but what if anything I can't say.

As for the two links in a row, I understand that, but believe me, I sharpened the chain multiple time, checked the bar, and only when I put on a new chain did the pulling go away. I have cut a lot since then, and sharpened maybe 8 times, still cuts true.

I've got 7-8 chains for my 18" saw and every one of them has a spot where there are two teeth in a row facing the same direction. I use that as a visual indicator when I'm sharpening my chains. I rotate it around until I get to the double facing links and start sharpening. When I return to the double facing links, I'm done.

Depending on the number of links in the chain, there may be no choice but to have two adjacent cutters that are the same handed. It really shouldn't matter. I have run many chains like that. Usually, for a chain to pull and cut crooked, it had to have been sharpened really badly.

When did you see my saws?

I cut partway through on one side, then go around and finish from the other side. On the average, it is a straight cut.
