Economy Getting Better?

The Bush administration didn't do us any favors, but the Obama administration has the economy in a tailspin. The so-called "indicators" are smoke and mirrors. Unless and until the business sector is released from oppressive governmental financial and regulatory restraints, it's not gonna get any better.

Simple algebraic formula: USA - Obama = financial recovery

I am so impressed with the quality of posts on this board. How many of you are increasing your food storage? I'm beginning to think as quickly as world problems are affecting our economy it won't be long before a panic of some kind causes a run on supermarkets similar to what happens before a big snowstorm where everyone decides to grab all the milk and bread off the shelves.

Does anyone have any recomendations on what one should stock up on? Something that if not needed would still be good to have around anyway.
Any advice on buying case lots of canned goods at a good price. I have thought about going to Sam's club and stoking up, but the huge can sizes make it impractacle for home use.

You are just now thinking about doing this? Do you know how to home can? That is what my parents, grandparents did to survive. I can every year and am looking to try some new things this year. My advice is to hook up with some local producers and barter or buy direct from them. Cut out the middle man at the grocery store.

It's stupidity to have a vehicle like that and not use it for it's intended purpose. Guys have to have that to beef up their image or something I guess. I drive a modest 1/2 ton pickup because I have to for my job, I need the 8 ft bed, but I hate the cost of doing it. All this big truck image stuff is going out the window here pretty soon.

Around here I call it an extension of their lack of manhood(to be nice)

It is all disheartening :( If we knew everything , not just the 1% they let us know , we couldn't sleep at night :ashamed: We have been a nation use to doing financially better than the generation before us , I'm concerned that philosophy ia about over with:(

Personally, I think NONE of the Congressional or Senate jobs should come with a retirement plan. That would curb their desire to do whatever it takes to get reelected and maybe for once, concentrate on running the country, somewhere besides into the ground.

Yea they should be part time jobs
If anybody see the movie Dave that is what he said!
A good movie too!!!

In the beginning............congressional seats were a part time job. They are the lawmakers, and it was the belief of the founders that the 'lawmakers', should hold full time employment............outside of the government(on the firing line, so to speak), in order to create legislation that benefitted the people not the government.

Is the economy getting better? Depends on where in the food chain you sit. If you're a Wall street'er and getting those big bonuses again, if your wealth is tied directly to the stock market, if you're in the upper echelon of corporate America and are able to cash in on those recent record corporate profits - the economy has never been better. If you're a factory worker looking for a job, or a teacher looking to keep your job, and you measure the economy by the unemployment rate, the economy is in the pits.

Despite the poor economy, the cost of materials has not gone down, it's gone up. We had a break due to a dip in energy prices, but that's reversing itself now and we're to take a hit (for about the 50th time) because we don't have the national discipline to reduce our dependency on oil. Without a reduction in materials costs, prices on things like equipment (as the OP noted) will rise despite any other up/down factor of the economy.

Get used to the current unemployment situation because the recovery of jobs will be very slow. It will take new jobs - not just new positions, new jobs. The jobs we lost over the past few years are in large part gone - they're not coming back. If we are to recover, we need to create entirely new jobs, and that's going to take time.

Get used to it. It took years, decades in some cases, of ignoring the issues, going for quick fixes, favoring politics over pragmatism, to get us where we are. To blame this on Bush or Obama alone is just more of that head-in-sand political nonsense and will only cause us to slip deeper in the hole. The *citizens* of this country need to wake up, acknowledge the steps it will take to turn this ship around and be ready to accept the pain that will accompany those changes...

I to agree that the economy is not where some people would like us to think it is. The best way for me to see this is by market prices across the board. Wheat, Corn, Oil, Beef, etc.... are all at major highs. When a 1800lb. bull sales for .90 cents a lb something is off. I know food prices are about to sky rocket whether we like it or not. My concern is not the high but the fall and just how low it will go.

I realize this is a political point that is used to get people to support legislation against big companies and increase taxes on those profits. I also understand that this tactic is effective at getting some people to vote and support their politician. What I don't understand is how it makes sense to anybody?

When the govnerment raises taxes on a company, the company raises the price of their product or moves to another location to create that product. There has been a massive loss of factory jobs because of NAFTA and the ability to open plants in other countries to make the same thing for less money. No government regulations and lower taxes. Lower payroll and no Unions.

After driving the company away, the company is then blamed for doing what it has to in order to stay in business. The goal of a business is not to provide jobs for everyone. IT EXISTS TO MAKE A PROFIT!!!!!!

Unemployment is in the tank because nobody wants to hire anybody because they cannot do so and make a profit. Small business is the backbone of the nation, and with what it costs to hire employees, it's easier and more profitable to not have any employees. I have enough work to have employees, but I'm not going to hire anybody because I will end up with less money in my pocket for doing so. Most of you who are employees of a business can go out an start a business any time you want to. Why don't you? Is it because you know that you can make more money working for somebody else? Or is it because you know how dificult the government has made it to own and run a business? Can you even comprehend how expensive and complicated it is to have emplyees in this day and age of MASSIVE GOVERNMENT and people who work for the government with nothing else to do but make life difficult for you so they look like they are doing something?

What a person makes who runs a company is none of our business. Being jealous and envious of those saleries is the road to ruin. If you don't think they deserve what they are paid to keep those companies open and profitable, then go do it yourself. Maybe you know how hard it is to become one of those people and it's easier to whine and complain about what they make, but ignore what it took to get there, or that because of their efforts, people are employed and the value of those companies is what fuels the stock market. Which, by the way, all your pensions are tied to!!!!!!!

Coroporations and business owners are not the problem. Government regulation and taxation are the problems. Government waste and greed is what fuels this, and until Government is made a whole bunch smaller, and people get elected that have a clue, the economy isn't going to get any better.
