electric dog fence depth ??

Several years back the wife and I used an electric sidewalk edger with doubled up blades to 'trench' about 2-1/2 acres. Long story short, it was a real PITA... tough to get thru the areas of hard pan, while the soft, muddy areas just filled in or clogged the little edger, etc. Not to mention hand feeding the wire on your hands and knees, pushing it down into the narrow slit with a myiad of 'tools'. Yech!

Last year we moved and fenced about 4 acres, again, by ourselves. Actually, by myself because the wife said she'd rather stick hot needles in her eyes than repeat the first fiasco (second only to having her work the handles on a 2-man post hole digger for 20-odd polebarn holes /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif).

After checking with my local rental places, I found one that had a "Pet Fence Trencher' for $20/day. It trenches (however deep you want) and lays the wire at the same time. I actually hooked it to my little Deere lawn tractor, pulled it around without even breaking a sweat and had the job done in less than a couple of hours including pickup/setup/cleanup/return time for the 1/2 day rate. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Do yourself a -BIG- favor and look one up. It makes the install a breeze!

P.S. Go Sabres!

Dholly, That's just cheating /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif or thinking /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I wished my local rental place had something like that when I buried just over 2000' foot of wire with a edger and middlebuster and on the hands and knees routine.

I'm on the rental search, I did a test run with the edger this evening cut well for 20ft. My ground is saturated and soft underneath, as we needed to mow badly. lawntractor did well, compact was making a mess. we got the front, around the house and side lot done ,other side and back are way to wet. Right now it is raining hard again. We will see what the weekend brings. I did drill a 3/8 hole in the basement wall 6" below grade to run the wire through. the transmitter will be a the basement wall.

I'm on sabbatical from hockey from May 11 to July 10
skating class for the really young ones July 10 -July 15
Tryouts first week of Aug. for my Bantam "A's"
my youngest boy likes the Sabres to take the cup
I have a soft spot for Edmonton, since the nocked off the Wings
Thanks for the tip on the rental

dog fence is in, no hiccups or concerns, I did not find a rental,
did not buy a subsoiler, I turned my KK 5' box blade upside down by flipping the top link bracket , cutting edges pointing up. This allowed the scairfier to protrude 10" below the box digging the prettiest little 3-4" deep trench with the box leaned back and still 5 or 6" in the air, with no chance to scalp and ground, I could probably subsoil 8" with this setup, I will use it when I set my rows for the sweet corn patch, three scairfier 24" on center
