electric fence charger

the new high impedance fence chargers are a very different technology from 30years ago.

buy a new one qualified for 100 miles of fence, you won't be sorry. It will punch thru brush and grass and not set them on fire.

I get my chargers at tractor supply .

Do you ever use the solar powered ones?

never used solar chargers
they clearly do not have the power to charge the distance I need charged.
I have 200 plus acres plus lots of cross fences
To put proper charge (5000+ volts ) on the fence, I use two of the "200" mile chargers.

The proper measure of charger strength is joules but not all chargers give this specification.

stronger chargers are better since you can hear shorts farther when hunting them . And, you WILL have shorts! Better in drought, but then you may not have that problem , being so close to me!

We have one of the apparently ones from tsc, I think its good for 5 miles. I can't remember the joules but I remember it was low compared to the other ones. We only have 300 yards of fence just to keep the cattle on one side of the pasture, while the grass grows on the other side. When we first put it up I could only feel a slight tinge. I didn't think it was enough until I took my rubber sole shoes off. Then I could tell if it was working, Haha. I didn't have any fancy meters on hand, I just had to check it the old fashioned way.

I think you have short to ground on the hot wires. That is why you get pulse when disconnected from ground.

"Next check output voltage of the fence charger by itself without the fence connected. You can do this by using an electric fence tester (Baygard #815) as this is the most accurate way to test your fence charger. You can also test your fence charger by taking a plastic handled screwdriver and shorting across the terminals on the fence charger. Place the base of the screwdriver on the red fence terminal and bring the tip of the screwdriver about 1/8 from the black ground terminal. You should get a blue spark that will jump a gap between the screwdriver and the terminal (approximately 1/16" to 1/8"). If you are getting a good charge (spark) from the fence charger then the fence charger is OK and the problem is somewhere in either your ground or your fence. You can also use this same test on the fence line if you are using metal T-posts, you can short between the post and the fence line. While this is not the most accurate way to test a fence, it will show you if you are getting voltage on the fence line."

Did you try this?

then I still recommended a high intensity charger in the 50 miles category .

agreed if charger works with no connections ,then problem is in wires , ground or hot .

Yes, I have the 5 mile solar from Tractor Supply. It's output is .4 Joules and I used it on 9 ac of pasture. The horses and cows were always getting out, and always at the worst possible time. The last time was in heavy fog at 0530 hrs and my neighbor woke me up saying that my two Clydes were walking down the 2 lane road 3 miles away. I don't know how they didn't get hit & kill someone or themselves. So that day I went to TS and bought the 100 mile plug in type that TJ recommends. The thing puts out 6 Joules, and let me tell you what a difference. I can grab the 5 mile in bare feet and take the hit no problem, the 100 mile will actually make me see a blue flash in my eyes(yes I was dumb enough to "test" it that way") and my jaw hurt for 20 min.

I now use the 5 mile on the chicken coop and it has kept the predators out. The Clydes no longer mess with the fence at all and have never escaped since(2 years). However, the cows can either smell it or sense it, but they know when it is off..takes them about an hr to walk thru the aluminium slick wire and start feeding on the "greener grass".

That's funny, I have yet to witness the blue flash. On the solar powered charger. It will handle most everything, except our longhorn is just too **** stubborn.

My current charger is made by Gallagher. I paid close to 400 bucks for it six or so years ago. I don't remember the joules or how much fence it is rated for but I can tell you that it packs a punch, lol!

I went through a few of those six joule models that run maybe 120 bucks before I bought this one.
