I bought one of those spark testers at TSC. It scares the crap out of me when I use it. A fresh battery will set off all the sparks on the tester. Burnt out a regular VOM before buying it.
My fence charger has a clicker on it, too. If the clicks aren't strong, I know the battery needs changing.
I'm just using a 12 v utility battery, a pair of them. Switch them out about once/month to once/6 weeks. Got my eye on a solar charger at TSC that's made for their Mule gates. This would cut it down to only 1 battery needed and eliminate having to haul them up and down the 100' high hill.
I buried 3 of those ground rods and linked them together with 10 gauge 3 strand wire. I just use real light weight, think it's 16-24 gauge bare wire for the electric lines, one about 4' and one at about 6". Kept the varmits out of the garden way down along the creek for 4 years now. I mount all the hardware, battery and other stuff into plastic 5 gallon pails screwed to the side of a 4x4 post. Wrap the wires around the bucket in the fall. Posts are just plastic with metal tips that I can push into the ground, bought at TSC. Had to get both (working and spare) Yellow Jacket chargers rebuilt this last year, after 3 years.
Have you ever conned anyone into peeing on one of the hot wires?
