we have about 2000 feet of electrified fencing, lowest running at 1ft+ from ground.
Beside a couple of die-hard tree seedlings no maintenance to do at all. It simply sparks the weeds dead. Even the tree seedlings die eventually but our horses are nervous about the spark sounds so i rather cut them.
Just make sure your device is strong build (heavily over dimensioned is also not good as it short-circuits itself in short time) and you should have no problems.
I see a lot of hand-sized devices lately (and for only 400ft thats the standard now) but i cant see how good cappacitors can be build in. So go for a good brand and a good experienced supplier and you should get the right directions.
Oh, almost forgot. Ours has a led indicator showing when a critical loss-level is reached. Working almost 10 years now with no problems.
